Men’s Basketball Claws Past Western Carolina, 83-55
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team claimed an 83-55 win over The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina at the Ramsey Center on Saturday evening.
This was the Spartans' eighth straight win over the Catamounts, and UNCG has taken 16 of the last 17 games.
Three Spartans tallied double figures, including Donovan Atwell who paced the Spartans with 17 points. Kenyon Giles registered 15 points and Ronald Polite III had 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
WCU made the first basket of the game and Atwell responded with a three-pointer at 18:25, 3-2. The Catamounts responded with back-to-back three-pointers before the Spartans scored five-straight points to tie the game, 8-8, with 16:24 on the clock. The lead was changed eight more times in the half, before UNCG used a 14-9 run to head to the locker room with a 30-26 advantage.
UNCG led from end to end in the second half. WCU closed the gap to one, 34-33, with its 7-4 run at the start of the half. The Spartans' 16-2 run put them up 15, 50-35, with 12:03 left on the clock. UNCG reached a 20-point advantage with Muon Reath's two made free throws at 8:05, 61-40. Domas Kauzonas' jumper with 2:37 left on the clock gave the Spartans their largest lead of the game, a 31-point edge, 80-49. WCU was only able to conclude the game with a 6-3 run, as UNCG walked away with the 83-55 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Breath had a team-high six rebounds and chipped in eight points.
- Polite III tallied a game-high six assists.
- This was Atwell's fourth-straight game making five or more three-pointers. He shot 5-for-9 from behind the arc.
- Demetrius Davis notched eight points and five rebounds.
- The Spartans outmatched the Catamounts in field goal percentage (46.8-32.7) and three-point percentage (46.9-17.9), while WCU had the edge in free throw percentage (87.5-71.4).
- Both teams tallied 22 points in the paint.
- UNCG dominated the floor in bench points (35-9), second chance points (18-15) and points off turnovers (9-8).
