Men’s Basketball to Clash with VMI in Saturday Afternoon Battle

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team hits the road to battle The Southern Conference (SoCon) opponent VMI on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip off at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Virginia.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team hits the road to battle The Southern Conference (SoCon) opponent VMI on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tipoff at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Virginia.  
 
The Spartans are 12-8 overall and 5-2 in SoCon play. The Keydets are 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
 
UNCG has the overall series advantage against the Keydets, 24-10. The Spartans have swept VMI in the regular season series in the last two years.
 

 
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • Mercer clipped UNCG, 79-78, on Wednesday night in the First Horizon Coliseum.
  • Demetrius Davis recorded his first double-double of the season and second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Ronald Polite III tallied a team-best 20 points, while Kenyon Giles and Joryam Saizonou each chipped in 11 points.
  • Davis' 10 rebounds were a game and season high.
  • Jalen Breath chipped in nine rebounds, while Polite III had eight boards.
  • UNCG outrebounded Mercer, 46-39.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Giles (16.5), Donovan Atwell (14.3) and Polite III (13.3).
  • Breath (5.8), Miles Jones (4.4) and Malik Henry (4.3) are pacing the team in rebounds per game.
  • The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in six categories, including three-point percentage defense (4th/27.8), turnovers per game (24th/10.1), three-point percentage (13th/39.1), scoring defense (32nd/64.8), three-pointers per game (23rd/10.3) and field goal percentage defense (35th/40.0).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, three-point percentage, three-point percentage defense and turnovers per game.
  • Giles is nationally ranked in the top 50 in three-point percentage (34th/42.9), total three-point field goals made (34th/56) and total three-pointers per game (43rd/2.95).
  • Nationally, Atwell is ranked in the top 50 in total three-point field goals made per game (7th/67), three pointers per game (14th/3.35), three-point attempts (26th/155) and three-point percentage (29th/43.2).
  • Atwell is leading the conference in three-point attempts and total three-point field goals made.
  • UNCG has the advantage against its foes in points per game, 74.9-64.8, three-pointers per game, 10.3-6.3, rebounds per game, 37.1-34.2, assists per game, 14.0-11.1, and steals per game, 6.3-5.7.
  • Giles joined the Spartans after two years at Radford, where he was first on the team with 1.4 steals per game and second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
  • Polite III and Henry both came to UNCG with four years previously at George Mason. Polite III has averaged 7.38 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Henry contributed a 62.5-percentage in field goals during his time with the Patriots.
  • Davis joined the Spartans after playing the last two seasons at Chattanooga and one year each at Lawson State Community College and Augusta.
  • UNCG concluded last season 21-11 overall and 12-6 in SoCon and it was the seventh year out of eight with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and Atwell was voted to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon team.
  • The Spartans returned nine from last year's roster and added seven newcomers.

 
SCOUTING VMI

  • VMI was voted to finish last in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Keydets have won the last three games, including over Furman (91-82), The Citadel (75-70) and Western Carolina (66-50).
  • VMI leads its opponents in points per game (77.1-72.7), rebounds per game (36.3-35.1), least turnovers per game (11.9-13.4) and steals per game (8.2-6.7).
  • Three Keydets are pacing the team with double figures, including Augustinas Kiudulas (15.8), Rickey Bradley, Jr. (15.7) and TJ Johnson (12.6).
  • Kiudulas is pacing the team with 6.4 rebounds per game, while Bradley, Jr. has 4.8 and Johnson is averaging 4.5 boards per game.
  • Bradley, Jr. is nationally ranked 48th in free throws (88) and first in the conference.
  • Johnson's 141 three-point attempts is 42nd nationally and third In the conference.
  • VMI is nationally ranked 40th in three-point attempts per game (27.8) and 44th in three-pointers per game (9.6).
  • The Keydets are leading the SoCon in fouls per game (15.3), free throw attempts per game (20.1) and free throws made per game (15.2).

The Spartans will return home for two games, first taking on ETSU on Wednesday, Jan. 29 inside Fleming Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday's game will be the Spartans' Blue Out game! The first 500 UNCG students will receive a Beanie, t-shirt and free food! UNCG students can enter to win VIP seats!
 
Then UNCG will begin the second round of SoCon games hosting Wofford on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the First Horizon Coliseum at 6:00 p.m. This game will serve as Reading Day.
