Gallagher Snags Singles Win in Women’s Tennis’ Loss to EKU, 4-1
RICHMOND, Ky. – Olivia Gallagher recorded a singles win in the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team's 4-1 loss to Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) on Sunday afternoon at Greg Adams Tennis Center.
"Saw this win for Olivia coming," said Head Coach Mat Iandolo. "This match came down to the doubles point and we were in great position to win it. We will grow from this experience."
EKU secured the first doubles match of the day with Anastas Cherniakova and Masha Fedenko defeating Alexandra Dodashev and Gallagher, 6-2, on court one. Elisabeth Birkevold and Lauren Thomson tied the doubles competition up at 1-1 with a 6-4 win over Izem Elif Olcer and Sasha Parkhomenko. However, Marilour Cote and Ceylink Ipek were able to rally together a 7-6 (7-4) win over Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell on court two, giving the Colonels the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
EKU earned the first two points in singles action with Parkhomenko defeating Dodashev, 6-3, 6-2, on court two and Zhansaya Bakytzhan coming away with the, 7-5, 6-2, win over Lauren Thomson on court four. Gallagher was able to hold the Colonels from clinching the match after taking a back-and-forth battle from Fedenko, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2 on court one for the Spartan's sole point of the day. Cote secured the Colonels' match point on court three with a 6-7 (1-7), 6-0, 6-0, win over Mitchell. Bly and Birkevold's singles matches remained unfinished at, 6-7 (6-8) and 3-6, respectively, as EKU walked away with the 4-1 win.
