Four Spartans Tally Double Figures in 59-48 Win Over UNC Asheville
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team earned a 59-48 win over Big South foe UNC Asheville (UNCA) on Tuesday in Fleming Gym.
Jayde Gamble and Nia Howard led the Spartans in scoring with 14 points apiece. Freshman Nya Smith followed closely behind with 12 points. Khalis Cain tallied her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, adding two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A free throw and second-chance layup from Cain, following a jumper from Jaila Lee gave UNCG a 5-0 advantage over UNCA. However, the Bulldogs bounced back with five points of their own. After Cain gave the Spartans the three-point lead, 16-13, UNCA responded with a three-pointer and jumper to close out the first frame on top, 18-16.
Both teams were evenly matched in the second quarter, 14-14. After Gamble knocked in a jumper at 55 seconds on the clock, UNCA's Alana Swift scored the last two points of the first half, granting the visiting team the two-score lead at the half, 32-30.
The Spartans and Bulldogs continued to go back-and-forth in the third frame. However, four points from Howard and eight points from Nya Smith would leave the Spartans only trailing by one at the end of the third quarter, 43-42.
UNCG dominated the final frame outscoring the Bulldogs, 17-5. At 9:42, a layup from Cain began an 8-0 run for the Spartans to take a 50-43 lead and maintain it the rest of the game. With the Spartans on top, 54-48, the squad notched four unanswered points to take their biggest lead of the game and secures the contest, 59-48.
