Samford Takes Twin Bill From Baseball in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team was swept in a doubleheader, 14-2 and 12-2 in seven innings both games, by the Samford Bulldogs on Friday in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

GAME ONE: Samford 14, UNCG 2 (7 Innings)
The Spartans pushed the first run across when Luke Jenkins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the opening stanza. However, the Bulldogs answered with four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the first. Cade Carr drove in the first run with an RBI double down the left-field line. Parker McDonald then put three runs on the board with a three-run home run out to left. After the first inning, Samford was leading UNCG, 4-1.

Jeffrey Ince pushed the Bulldogs' lead to four, 5-1, in the second inning with a solo home run over the wall in left-center.

The Bulldogs then had their lead extended to 6-1 in the third inning when Gus Gandy chopped a single to third and scored Jake Souders.

JJ Parsons scored the final run for the Spartans when he hit a solo home run to left, cutting the deficit to 6-2 in the fourth frame.

Samford responded to Parsons' solo blast with six runs on three hits in the bottom half of the fourth. The surge was capped with a two-run home run to left-center by Michael Gupton that made it 12-2 Bulldogs.

Samford scored two more runs with an RBI single from Gandy and sacrifice fly from Angelo Prieto to seal the eventual run-rule victory by a 14-2 margin in seven innings.

NOTES:

GAME TWO: Samford 12, UNCG 2 (7 Innings)
Samford opened the scoring in game two with four runs in the second inning. After Prieto drew a bases-loaded walk, two runs scored via two wild pitches. Scoring in the inning ended with Carr hitting a sacrifice fly out to right, which scored Prieto and made it 4-0 Bulldogs.

After Jose Perez and Wolf hit back-to-back singles to open the third for the Spartans, Truitt drove in Perez with a knock of his own into left. After three innings in Birmingham, Samford was still leading UNCG, 4-1.

Souders added three more runs to Samford's lead to make it 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer to right.
 
The fifth inning saw Samford push two more runs across to make it 9-1 with back-to-back RBI hits from Ince and Jackson Harris.

Jacob Dilley grounded out to third in the top of the sixth inning to score Jenkins for UNCG and cut Samford's advantage to 9-2.

Samford's Prieto and Ince answered by hitting back-to-back singles to score runs in the bottom of the sixth. Harris then hit a sacrifice fly deep to center, which scored Gandy from third and lined up the eventual 12-2 run-rule victory for the Bulldogs.

  • Wolf and Budzik led UNCG with two hits each.
  • Truitt and Dilley each posted an RBI.
  • Jenkins and Perez scored the runs for UNCG.
  • Dilley stole one base for the Spartans.
