Baseball Opens 2025 SoCon Tournament Facing Wofford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 6 seed UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will open competition in the 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament against the No. 7 seed Wofford Terriers on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 6 seed UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will open competition in the 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament against the No. 7 seed Wofford Terriers on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Spartans, who finished the regular season 21-32 (9-12 SoCon), finished sixth in the conference standings to match up with the Terriers, who are 31-25 (8-13 SoCon) and finished seventh in the league.

Wednesday night's game will be for the right to advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket. The winner will face No. 3 seed The Citadel on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
 

LAST WEEK FOR THE SPARTANS

  • After winning 8-4 over Longwood on Tuesday, UNCG dropped two out of three games in a weekend set against Western Carolina to wrap up the regular season.
  • The Spartans fell 8-6 on Thursday night before senior right-handed pitcher Sam Murchison pitched a complete game shutout in UNCG's 1-0 win on Senior Day Friday night.
  • As a result of the stellar outing, Murchison was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.
  • It marked UNCG's third SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor this season after freshman Jake Colucci and junior Jay Miller were also recognized on May 5 and Feb. 17, respectively.
  • It marked the first complete game shutout for UNCG since Sammy Tortorella posted one last season in a 13-0 seven-inning win against High Point on April 24.
  • The last time it was accomplished in nine innings was by Austin Parsley on April 30, 2022, in a 4-0 win at The Citadel.
  • The series ended with the Catamounts winning 13-6 over the Spartans in Saturday's finale at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
  • With the outcome of Saturday's contest, Western Carolina clinched the fifth seed while UNCG finished with the sixth seed.
  • Freshman Parker Wight led the way offensively for the Spartans in the four games last week, batting .385 (5-for-13) with three doubles and a home run for a team-high 11 total bases and three RBI.
  • Noah Chapman, Mayson Dear, Rob Ready, Grant Aycock and Hunter Shuey combined for 17 strikeouts on Saturday, the second-most for UNCG in a single game this season.

SCOUTING UNCG

  • The Spartans own an overall record of 21-32 and posted a 9-12 record in league games for sixth in the SoCon.
  • Four student-athletes from the UNCG baseball team were named to All-Southern Conference (SoCon) teams on Tuesday.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Danny Thompson Jr. earned a spot on the All-SoCon First Team, junior infielder Jacob Budzik was named to the All-SoCon Defensive Team while Wight and JJ Parsons landed on the All-SoCon Freshman Team.
  • With Friday night's 1-0 shutout over Western Carolina, UNCG leads the SoCon and ranks 30th in NCAA Division I this season with four shutouts.
  • The Spartans stand at 49th in sacrifice bunts (31), 56th in strikeout-to-walk-ratio (2.24) and 63rd in walks allowed per nine innings (4.03).
  • A threat to steal, UNCG also ranks 83rd nationally in stolen bases (82) and 87th in stolen bases per game (1.55).
  • The Spartans' pitching staff stands at 70th in the country by averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Murchison and Thompson Jr. lead the Spartans with 79 strikeouts this season, which ranks third in the SoCon and 93rd in NCAA Division I.
  • Thompson Jr. is also 13th nationally and leads the SoCon, averaging 12.62 strikeouts per nine innings while leading UNCG with four saves this season.
  • Chapman is third for UNCG with 73 strikeouts and ranks 47th nationally with a 4.56 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • The Spartans set a new season-high for single-game hits and runs three weeks ago while facing The Citadel on May 4, with 18 runs on 20 hits.
  • When scoring 10 or more runs this season, UNCG is 5-1.
  • Brantley Truitt is leading the Spartans in terms of batting average at a .313 (47-for-150) clip.
  • Jeremy Wolf is batting .299 (58-for-194) and leads the Spartans with 17 doubles and 37 runs scored. He is also tied for the team lead in extra-base hits with Wight at 22.
  • Wight leads UNCG with nine home runs and 28 RBI.
  • Jacob Dilley is second on the squad with six home runs while Luke Holland is third with five round-trippers.
  • UNCG faced four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents earlier in the season, amounting to eight-straight games from Feb. 18-March 4. The Spartans went 3-5 during the stretch.
  • The Spartans opened the eight-straight games against ACC foes with an upset over then-No. 13 Wake Forest at home, 4-0, on Feb. 18.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish first in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Ready was named one of two SoCon Preseason Pitchers of the Year by the league. The other was Michael Harpster of ETSU.
  • In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Ready (SP), Trey Truitt (DH), Holland (OF) and Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Shuey (SP) and Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
  • Chapman is back as well after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
  • The Spartans saw a historic 2024 season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
  • UNCG captured its third SoCon Regular Season Championship in 2024 behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
  • Entering the 2024 SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
  • The Spartans will be competing for their fourth SoCon Tournament title this week after previously winning in 1998, 2018 and 2022.
  • The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.
  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his second year at the helm of the UNCG baseball program after leading the Spartans last season, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, to a regular season championship.
  • He was named the 2024 SoCon Coach of the Year and had an interim tag removed following the season on May 28.
  • Ellis has been at UNCG since he was first hired as assistant coach in the fall of 2022, leading the charge in recruiting and as the outfield coach before being promoted to interim head coach in January 2024 and head coach in May 2024.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS

  • Wofford owns an overall record of 31-25 and finished seventh in the SoCon with an 8-13 mark in league games.
  • The Terriers closed out the regular season hosting the VMI Keydets in a SoCon series in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where they won games one, 8-7, and two, 7-6, before falling in the finale on Friday, 15-6.
  • Ryan Wynn is the only Terrier to play in all 56 games this season. He is batting .333 (76-for-228) and leads the team in doubles (18), home runs (5), RBI (44) and total bases (115).
  • Wynn hit for the cycle in the series finale on opening weekend against Ohio, marking the third cycle in program history.
  • James Layman leads Wofford offensively, batting .369 (58-for-157) with a .493 on-base percentage.
  • Champ Davis has been Wofford's strongest pitcher in terms of ERA (1.97) and opponent batting average (.198).
  • Carter Rasmussen leads the team this season with three saves and 56 strikeouts.
  • Niko Brini is Wofford's stolen base leader with 26 on the season, which is third in the SoCon and 57th nationally.
  • With 156 steals this season, Wofford has stolen 100 or more bases in now 12-straight seasons dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I. They rank fifth in stolen bases and sixth with a 2.79 average for stolen bases per game.
  • The Terriers have been hit 60 times at the plate, 20th most in the nation.
  • Wofford's 12-5 triumph over No. 23 Kentucky on March 8 was the program's first ranked win since besting No. 18 Dallas Baptist in 2022.
  • With the 14-3 win over No. 17 Troy on March 25, the Terriers have victories over two different ranked teams in the same season for the first time in program history.
  • J.J. Edwards joined the coaching staff in the fall of 2011 as the volunteer assistant and was promoted to assistant coach in the summer of 2012.
  • He was named the head coach of the program on July 13, 2023.
  • Now in his 14th season on the staff overall, Edwards is in his second campaign as the head coach of the Terriers.

SERIES HISTORY VS. WOFFORD
UNCG and Wofford have met 93 times dating back to the initial match-up in 1997. The Spartans have had the upperhand, holding the all-time series lead at 57-36.

The Spartans swept Wofford while hosting the three-game regular season series at UNCG Baseball Stadium from April 12-13. UNCG won both games of a doubleheader on April 12, 9-2 and then 11-1 in seven innings, before sweeping the series with a 4-1 victory on April 13.

Wofford won three of the four meetings last season. The Terriers won the regular-season series by taking two of three before the squads met in the SoCon Tournament, where Wofford earned a 5-2 win in Greenville.
