Baseball Drops Series Opener at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 10-5 to the USC Upstate Spartans in a non-conference series opener on Thursday evening at Harley Park.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 10-5 to the USC Upstate Spartans in a non-conference series opener on Thursday evening at Harley Park.

USC Upstate got on the board first with five runs on three hits in the opening inning. After Scott Campbell singled up the middle to score two runs, Wylie Waters hit a three-run home run to left to make it 5-0.

USC Upstate then added another run in the third and fourth inning to extend its lead to 7-0. It started with Campbell making it 6-0 with a solo home run to left in the third. The fourth frame saw USC Upstate score on a wild pitch to make it a 7-0 lead.

UNCG got on the board in the fifth inning when Zachary Walsh smacked a single up the middle to score Brantley Truitt from second on a hit-and-run play. Jeremy Wolf then chopped a single over to third, allowing Luke Jenkins to score from third. Jose Perez beat out a would-be double play to allow Walsh to score from third before the inning could end. After five stanzas, USC Upstate was leading UNCG by four, 7-3.

USC Upstate answered by plating another run with Gage Griggs laying down a safety squeeze bunt to third to score Waters and push the lead to 8-3.

After a wild pitch allowed another run to score for USC Upstate, a fielding error in the outfield put another run up and made it 10-3.

UNCG scored one run in both the seventh and eighth innings to cut the deficit to five. However, USC Upstate stood its ground to secure the win in game one of the series, 10-5.

NOTES:

  • Truitt led UNCG with three hits.
  • Jenkins paced the team with two runs scored.
  • Four different players from UNCG had one RBI.
  • Rob Ready started and went four innings for UNCG on the mound.
  • Jake Colucci, Mayson Dear and Dylan Smith pitched in relief.
  • Both sides had four walks and one stolen base.
