New Mexico State Gets Past Baseball in Tuesday Matinee
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball was handed a 9-6 loss by the New Mexico State (NMSU) Aggies in a Tuesday matinee at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Aggies scored the first run during the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. After Tommy Meluskey was hit by a pitch with one out, he advanced to second on a groundout and then scored on a bloop single into shallow center.
The Spartans grabbed the lead by scoring five runs on four hits all with two outs during the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Steele got the rally started when he skipped a double off the base of the wall in left. Jeremy Wolf then drove him in with a single through the left side. After Trey Truitt drew a walk in the next at-bat, Case Kermode hit his second home run in as many games out to left to score three runs. Parker Wight followed it up with a blast to right, marking the Spartans' first back-to-back home runs of the season. After three innings in the Gate City, UNCG led NMSU 5-1.
New Mexico State quickly answered with four runs on three hits in the next half inning to tie the game, 5-5. Meluskey chopped a single back to the pitcher and the ensuing throw was errant, allowing two runs to score. A single by Dane Woodcook and double by Joey Craig scored two more runs for the Aggies in the top of the fourth to tie the game, 5-5.
The Aggies reclaimed the lead with a three-run home run by Bryce Campbell during the top of the seventh inning.
Mitch Namie extended the Aggies' lead to 9-5 with one more run via an RBI single up the middle, which scored Steve Solorzano from second.
UNCG rallied in the ninth, loading the bases with just one out. However, the Spartans only managed one run with Wight hitting a sacrifice fly out to right, which scored Wolf and cut the deficit to 9-6, where it ultimately stood.
