Men’s Basketball Hosts Elon in Home Opener
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team will open the 2025-26 home campaign with Triad foe Elon on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
Prior to the game, UNCG students are invited to Spartan Madness, taking place at Moran Commons in front of the Fountain View Dining Hall on campus. The home opening event is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. and everyone will march over to Fleming Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m. to cheer on the Spartans.
Saturday's matchup will mark the 46th meeting between the Spartans and the Phoenix with the series dating back to 1971. Elon took the most recent meeting against UNCG on Dec. 21, 2024, with a 73-69 win in Elon, North Carolina.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- The Spartans opened the 2025-26 season at Kansas State, dropping the contest 93-64 in Manhattan, Kansas.
- Three Spartans scored double-digit points, including Justin Neely with a team-high 15, Lilian Marville with 14 points and Domas Kauzonas with 10 points.
- Neely led the Spartans with 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
- The Spartans held the 34-33 lead at the half, but the Wildcats were able to pick up momentum in the second half for the win.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) in the 2024-25 season.
- This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
- Neely's five offensive rebounds in Monday night's game leads the SoCon.
- KJ Younger is pacing the league and 23rd in the country with his four steals.
- The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three point percentage (37.2).
- Head Coach Mike Jones enters his fifth year at the helm of the Blue & Gold after achieving his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
- UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top-three seed.
- The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 12 newcomers.
- UNCG was picked to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.
- The Spartans will play 10 games in Fleming Gymnasium and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.
SCOUTING ELON
- The Phoenix opened the 2025-26 season with a 99-51 victory over Belmont Abbey on Wednesday in Elon, North Carolina.
- Chandler Cuthrell led the team with a career-high 21 points.
- Ja'Juan Carr added 15 points, four rebounds and two steals.
- Kacper Klazek notched 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
- Sophomore Caleb Middleton nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
- Elon has added nine newcomers to its 2025-26 roster including eight transfers and one freshman.
- The Phoenix have five returners from last season on the 2025-26 roster.
- Isaac Harrell is the top returning scorer (4.1) and rebounder (4.0).
- Elon was picked to finish 12th in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Head Coach Billy Taylor is in his fourth year at the helm of the Elon men's basketball program. He has led the Phoenix to a 39-59 record during his time with the program.
- UNCG men's basketball alum and current Elon Assistant Coach Courtney Eldridge returns to his alma mater on Saturday.
- Eldridge was apart of the Spartans' 2001 NCAA Tournament team that won the SoCon Tournament title and finished with a 19-12 record. He is the Spartans' all-time leader in assists (584) and is second in program history in steals (226).
