Men’s Soccer Honors 10 Seniors With Win Over Mercer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 23 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team crushed Mercer, 3-0, on senior night at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday. Senior Arnaud Tattevin scored a brace in the match with Steven Hernandez also contributing a late goal as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer came out in a defensive 4-4-2 formation in the match to try and counter the explosive UNCG attack. The Bears sat back as the Spartans launched shots at the Mercer goalkeeper. UNCG took 12 shots in the half compared to Mercer's one with the most dangerous opportunity coming from Kimito Fritz's shot in the 34th minute that the keeper barely saved. The match remained even heading into halftime with the Spartans controlling 76% of the possession.
The second half saw a continued UNCG offense with seven shots within the first 20 minutes of play. In the 67th minute, Fritz found Tattevin in the 18-yard box who then slipped off the defender and buried the shot top right to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead. The UNCG attack was kicked into its second gear with three shots in a 10-minute span. This offensive deluge led to a Mercer handball in the box which put Tattevin on the penalty spot. The captain coolly took the penalty without a challenge from the Mercer keeper to put the score 2-0 in favor of UNCG. The Spartans capped off the match with a 85th minute goal from Steven Hernandez who made a deep run past the defense and lobbed a shot over the keeper to put the final score at 3-0.
