Softball to Face Charleston Southern and Fairfield in Weekend Contests
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will travel to South Carolina to face Charleston Southern and Fairfield in a weekend tournament from Friday to Sunday at CSU Softball Complex.
UNCG is 17-7 overall, Charleston Southern is 9-10 overall and Fairfield is 4-12 overall.

- The Spartans most recently won 4-1 against the Eagles.
- Kaylyn Belfield averaged .500 (6-for-12) at the plate with three runs scored, one double, and one RBI.
- Jessie Shipley had two home runs over the four-game weekend, while Jorde Chartrand and Laney Deane each had one homer.
- Addy Berry and Reese Byrd each had a win in the circle, while Salem Ward had a save.

- Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .492 batting average and has successfully stolen 11-of-12 bases.
- Belfield is 21st nationally with her hitting clip.
- Loftin is leading the Spartans with 31 hits and is one of three Spartans with a .400 or better batting average, swinging .403 at the plate in 24 games played with a team-high 26 RBI.
- UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs per game (9th/1.58), home runs (13th/38), slugging percentage (15th/.610), walks (17th/103), RBI per game (17th/7.04), RBI (19th/169), scoring (19th/7.50), on-base percentage (21st/.431), total runs (22nd/180) and batting average (23rd/.341).
- Shipley and Rylie Williams are pacing the team with seven homers each. They are ranked 56th nationally and are second in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
- Six other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with Shipley and Meredith Harwood each tallying 21, Williams with 20, Chartrand with 19, Macy Michael with 17 and Deane with 11.
- Ward leads the pitching staff with 58 strikeouts, a 2.44 ERA and a 7-3 record.
- Ward is 58th in victories and 62nd nationally in strikeouts.
- Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
- The Spartans are leading the SoCon in 15 categories, including batting average, home runs, home runs per game, on-base percentage, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs, triples, triples per game, win/loss percentage and walks.
- Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
- UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.
- The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
- It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
- It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
- The Spartans saw another successful statistical year, leading the SoCon in home runs per game (1.37), home runs (81), slugging percentage (0.490), triples per game (0.22) and walks (240).
- UNCG was also ranked nationally in the top 30 in four categories: sixth in walks, 11th in home runs, 14th in home runs per game and 30th in slugging percentage.
- Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
- The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
- UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.
- The Spartans have four of their pitchers returning this season, including Chartrand.

- Fairfield was voted to finish tied for seventh in the 2025 Preseason Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coaches Poll (MAAC).
- The Stags finished 14-33 overall in 2024 with a 10-14 MAAC record.
- Fairfield took two of five games at the Penn State Invitational, gaining a split with Canisius University, beating Lafayette College, and dropping a pair to the host school.
- The Stags then played their first game in Connecticut but came up short against Central Connecticut State, 5-4.
- Anna Paravati is leading the team with a .375 hitting percentage, scoring nine runs, with a team-best four doubles and 13 RBI.
- Paravati has a team-high 18 hits this season.
- Ava Armuth has two home runs this season and has a .303 batting average.
- Charlie Warren is pacing the team with 10 runs scored and is one of three Stags with one home run.
- In the circle, Alyssa Weinberg has 57 strikeouts in 46.2 innings pitched. She has a 4-2 record so far with five complete games.
- Fairfield faced SoCon Foe Wofford twice in DeLand, Florida, falling 2-0 and 3-0 in mid-February.
- The Stags are 34th nationally in hits allowed per seven innings with 10.57.
RUNDOWN ON CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
- Charleston Southern was voted to tie for fourth in the 2025 Preseason Big South Poll.
- The Buccaneers finished the 2024 season 23-27 overall and 9-9 in the conference.
- Charleston Southern is coming off a three-game losing streak, where they faced Clemson twice and Coastal Carolina.
- Prior to that, the Buccaneers were on a six-game winning streak.
- Carsten Sandvig is pacing the team with a .362 batting average, two home runs, two triples, five doubles and 16 RBI.
- Blakley Kingsmore has successfully stolen 11-of-13 bases this season.
- Weslin Jones and Emma Villaescusa are tied for second on the team with 12 RBI each.
- The Buccaneers are 31st nationally with 1.89 stolen bases per game and 51st with 36 total stolen bases.
