Women’s Soccer Meets The Citadel in SoCon First Round on Tuesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team is set to begin postseason play by hosting The Citadel on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium with a 6:00 p.m. start time.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team is set to begin postseason play by hosting The Citadel on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium with a 6:00 p.m. start time.
 
The Spartans enter The 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament as the seventh seed with their 4-8-5 overall record and 3-3-3 conference mark. The Bulldogs concluded the regular season 4-10-3 overall and 0-8-1 in the league, earning the final spot in the standings.

SERIES HISTORY
UNCG leads the all-time series, 20-0-1. This season, the two teams battled to a scoreless draw on Oct. 17 in Charleston, South Carolina, on the Parade Deck. Last season, the Spartans claimed a 2-1 victory in Greensboro, North Carolina, when UNCG came from behind for the win.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
UNCG dropped a 2-1 contest to Samford in the regular season finale on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. Freshman Merle Greulich scored the Spartans' only goal on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. Samford claimed the win with a goal in the 89th minute to secure the second seed in the SoCon Tournament.  
 
SPARTANS IN SOCON POSTSEASON

  • UNCG has won eight SoCon Championships since joining the league in 1997, with the last title coming in 2018.
  • This will be the first time that the two teams have met in postseason action.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • Greulich is pacing the team with nine points and four goals, as well as chipping in one assist during her freshman campaign.
  • Ava Kiss is second on the team with eight points, scoring three goals and two assists this season.
  • Taylor Mentzer and Morgan Brubaker each have scored three goals for six points.
  • Mel Herrera, Bailey Gourdine, Rachel Poplin and Azumi Oka have each chipped in one goal.
  • Along with Kiss, Nicole Hutchinson, Mairead Gayer and Ryen Ortiz each have two helpers.
  • In net, Malone has started in 16 games and played in 17 giving up 19 goals for 1.15 goals against average.
  • The Spartans have the edge over their opponents in shots, 192-169, while their foes have the advantage in corner kicks, 78-73.
  • UNCG had 25 shots against the Keydets and it was the first game since Sept. 7, 2023, when the Spartans had 20 or more shots. The Spartans had 20 shots against Coastal Carolina that day and won 3-0.
  • UNCG has lost six games by one goal this season, which included when then-ranked No. 22 Colorado defeated the Spartans, 1-0, in August.
  • UNCG has five shutouts this season, which matches its total from last season.
  • Among the SoCon, UNCG is third in goals against average (1.11) and shutout percentage (.294) and fourth in save percentage (.753).
  • Malone was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1 for a 1-0 clean sheet against Chattanooga. This was her second career weekly award.
  • She earned her first honor on Sept. 3. This was the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 28, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.
  • Head Coach Stefani Workman is in her first year at the helm of the Spartans and eighth year overall with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Spartans added six freshmen and one graduate transfer to the 2024 roster.

SCOUTING THE CITADEL

  • The Citadel was voted to finish ninth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Bulldogs are coming off back-to-back losses to Mercer, 3-1, and Furman, 4-2.
  • The Citadel has had five shutouts this season which is the most since the 2022 season when the Bulldogs had seven.
  • Chloe Washington is pacing the Bulldogs with five goals. She also has two assists for 12 total points.
  • Ariana Paez is tied with Washington with 12 points. She has scored four goals and added four assists.
  • Elisa Fuentes is third on the team with 10 points (4g, 2a).
  • Zoe Santos has started in 15 games and played in 16 in net for the Bulldogs. She has given up 33 goals for 2.24 goals against average.
  • Santos is nationally ranked 43rd in saves per game (5.25) and 45th in total saves (84). She is second in the SoCon in both categories.
  • Opponents are outshooting the Bulldogs, 243-160. Foes are also outmatching them in shots on goal, 126-76, and corner kicks, 66-50.
  • Nationally, The Citadel is 63rd in saves per game (5.35).
  • Among the SoCon, the Bulldogs are third in shutout percentage (.294) and saves per game.

UP NEXT
The winner of this matchup will take on Samford in the SoCon Quarterfinals, which will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, at Shauna Yelton Field on Friday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT. Samford earned the second seed at the conclusion of the regular season for the right to host a quarterfinal and semifinal game.
