Western Carolina Sweeps Volleyball

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell, 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 22-25) to the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday evening in The Southern Conference (SoCon) schedule to conclude the 2024 regular season home slate in Fleming Gym.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell, 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 22-25) to the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday evening in The Southern Conference (SoCon) schedule to conclude the 2024 regular season home slate in Fleming Gym.
 
Prior to Saturday's match, Madeline Timmerman, America Anderson, Cece Fitz, Avery Sziksai and Emily Hanlon were recognized in a special senior day ceremony for their hard work and dedication to the UNCG volleyball program.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Two consecutive kills from Allie Sweet, followed by a service ace from Chloe Nussbaum got the Spartans out to a 3-0 lead to start the match. UNCG continued to widen its advantage, leading by as much as seven in the set (13-6). However, with the Spartans on top, 21-15, Western Carolina posted a 9-1 run to take the 24-22 lead. Set one was a narrow battle towards the end, but the Catamounts were able to pull out the overtime win for the 26-24 security of the first game.
 
The Catamounts posted three unanswered points to begin set two, but UNCG bounced back with a 3-1 run of its own to tie the game (4-4). The game would go back-and-forth in the early goings. However, with the Spartans on top, 9-8, Western Carolina notched seven points to take the 15-9 advantage and maintain control for the remainder of the set. The Catamounts closed out set two with a 2-0 run to claim it, 25-19.
 
The third and final set was a battle throughout with Fleming Gym seeing a total of 14 ties and six lead changes. With Western Carolina at match point, 24-18, a kill from Sweet began a 4-0 run for the Spartans. However, the Catamounts were finally able to secure their match point to earn the set, 25-22, for the 3-0 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Sweet recorded her third double-double of the season and her career after leading the match with 23 kills and adding 13 digs.
  • Sweet and Graylinn Serge led the match with two service aces apiece.
  • Nussbaum led the way as the libero with 17 digs.
  • Gragg paced the Spartans as the setter with 36 assists.
  • Fitz and Hanlon stood out at the net with four and three blocks, respectively.
