Baseball Hosts First SoCon Series Against Wofford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team hosts the Wofford Terriers this weekend in a Southern Conference (SoCon) three-game weekend series at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
UNCG enters the weekend 4-2 in the SoCon with a 14-18 mark overall while Wofford carries a 2-4 league mark with a 22-12 overall record so far this season.

- UNCG fell 9-6 while facing the Wake Forest Demon Deacons during a non-conference midweek test on Tuesday at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
- Sophomore outfielder Tyler Steele led the Spartans with two hits and two RBI.
- Junior infielder Jeremy Wolf tallied UNCG's other RBI.
- Senior infielder Jose Perez and Steele each had a double.
- Noah Chapman made his fourth start of the season for UNCG. He threw two complete shutout innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
- Rob Ready, Mayson Dear and Hunter Shuey made relief appearances for UNCG.
- UNCG led in walks, 8-5, stolen bases, 2-0, and double plays, 1-0.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- The Spartans own an overall record of 14-18 with a 4-2 mark in the SoCon for a tie at first with Samford in the league standings.
- UNCG is off to a solid start in the SoCon, clinching back-to-back series wins in the league while on the road at VMI and ETSU.
- UNCG stands tied for 17th in the country with three shutouts this season, 24th in strikeout-to-walk-ratio (2.63), 30th in walks allowed per nine innings (3.61) and 30th in sacrifice bunts (22).
- Junior right-hander Jay Miller leads the Spartans in total strikeouts with 51, which ranks 57th nationally.
- Senior right-handed reliever Danny Thompson Jr. ranks 62nd in the nation with four saves and 85th in the country with 48 strikeouts this season.
- Senior right-handed pitcher Sam Murchison is third on the team with 46 punchouts while sophomore southpaw Noah Chapman is fourth on the Spartans with 44 strikeouts.
- Murchison leads UNCG in wins with a 4-3 record, which, based on victories, stands 86th in NCAA Division I.
- The Spartans matched a season-high for runs (13) on March 29 at VMI in the 13-12 victory over the Keydets. UNCG previously plated 13 runs on March 2 vs. Pitt in a 13-11 win at home.
- Wolf leads the Spartans with a .365 (42-for-115) batting average and 11 doubles this season. He also leads the team with 23 runs scored.
- Freshman first baseman Parker Wight leads UNCG with seven home runs and 18 RBI after hitting another one at ETSU last weekend. He has hit five home runs in the last nine games while being the only Spartan to play in all 32 games this season.
- Junior outfielder Luke Holland is second on the team with four home runs and 16 RBI.
- UNCG faced four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents earlier in the season, amounting to eight-straight games from Feb. 18-March 4. The Spartans went 3-5 during the stretch.
- The Spartans opened the eight straight games against ACC foes with an upset over then-No. 13 Wake Forest at home, 4-0, on Feb. 18.
- The Spartans were voted to finish first in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Ready was named one of two SoCon Preseason Pitchers of the Year by the league. The other was Michael Harpster of ETSU.
- In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Ready (SP), Trey Truitt (DH), Holland (OF) and Grant Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Shuey (SP) and Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
- Chapman is back as well after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
- The Spartans are coming off a historic season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
- UNCG captured its third SoCon Regular Season Championship behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
- Entering the SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
- UNCG led the SoCon a season ago in ERA (5.19), fewest runs allowed (297) and lowest opponent batting average (.267).
- The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.
- Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his second year at the helm of the UNCG baseball program after leading the Spartans last season, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, to a regular season championship.
- He was named the 2024 SoCon Coach of the Year and had an interim tag removed following the season on May 28.
- Ellis has been at UNCG since he was first hired as assistant coach in the fall of 2022, leading the charge in recruiting and as the outfield coach before being promoted to interim head coach in January 2024 and head coach in May 2024.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
- Wofford is 22-12 is overall and 2-4 in SoCon play.
- The Terriers come to Greensboro fresh off a midweek win over Winthrop, 12-3, which got Wofford back on track after suffering a weekend sweep at home to Samford, 14-0 (7 innings), 19-5 (8 innings) and 6-2.
- Wofford's 12-5 triumph over No. 23 Kentucky on March 8 was the program's first ranked win since besting No. 18 Dallas Baptist in 2022.
- With the 14-3 win over No. 17 Troy on March 25, the Terriers have victories over two different ranked teams in the same season for the first time in program history.
- Ryan Wynn hit for the cycle in the series finale on opening weekend against Ohio, marking the third cycle in program history.
- By taking two-of-three at The Citadel, Wofford has won its opening SoCon series in six-straight full seasons.
- All five qualified Terrier batters are hitting over .300 with James Layman leading the way at .420, best in the SoCon.
- Layman adds an on-base percentage of .555, best in the SoCon and 10th in the nation.
- Layman is Wofford's stolen base leader with 18 on the season, which is fifth in the SoCon.
- With 112 steals this season, Wofford has stolen 100 or more bases in now 12-straight seasons dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.
- The Terriers have been hit 75 times at the plate, 14th most in the nation.
- J.J. Edwards joined the coaching staff in the fall of 2011 as the volunteer assistant and was promoted to assistant coach in the summer of 2012.
- He was named the head coach of the program on July 13, 2023.
- Now in his 14th season on the staff overall, he is in his second campaign as the head coach of the Terriers.
SERIES HISTORY VS. WOFFORD
UNCG and Wofford have met 90 times dating back to the initial match-up in 1997. The Spartans have had the upperhand, holding the all-time series lead 54-36.
Wofford won three of the four meetings last season. The Terriers won the regular-season series by taking two-of-three before the squads met in the SoCon Tournament, where Wofford earned a 5-2 triumph in Greenville.
