Baseball Falls in Second Game at Virginia Tech, 6-2, Looks Ahead to Monday’s Rubber Match
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell by a final score of 6-2 on Sunday to the Virginia Tech Hokies at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
The Spartans, who are now 4-2, will look ahead to Monday's rubber match at 1:00 p.m. in Blacksburg after they claimed game one of the series, 6-2, back on Saturday.
The Hokies got on the board first in the second inning. After Sam Tackett drew a leadoff walk, Treyson Davis and David Lewis hit a double and then triple, respectively, to each score a run. Anderson French then grounded out to the UNCG second baseman, Jeremy Wolf, but it was deep enough to score Lewis from third, making it 3-0 Virginia Tech.
Garrett Michel extended the Hokies' lead to 4-0 with a knock to center in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored David McCann from second. Hunter Shuey then entered the game to pitch in relief of Jay Miller for the Spartans. In the next at-bat, Lewis then chopped a single to short, allowing Hughes to score from third. French made it 6-0 after he roped a double into the corner in left, which scored Michel. In relief of Shuey, Rob Ready entered the game and shutout the Hokies for the final two and two-thirds innings.
UNCG got on the board in the top half of the eighth inning thanks to an RBI groundout from Zachary Walsh to score Jacob Budzik. Parker Wight then lined a single up the middle and into center to plate JJ Parsons, cutting the deficit to 6-2. However, Mathieu Curtis made his way out of the eighth and then hung a zero on the Spartans in the ninth to secure the 6-2 win for the Hokies, evening the series at a game apiece.
