Baseball to Make Short Trek to Face High Point on Tuesday

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG fell in the last two games of a weekend series hosting Radford, 4-3 in 13 innings on Saturday and 11-6 on Sunday, after winning the series opener, 8-2 on Friday.
  • UNCG's extra-inning battle against Radford was the first Spartans' game to go to extras since facing The Citadel on May 4, 2024, when UNCG won 8-5 in 11 innings on the road.

  • UNCG is tied for 19th in the country with two shutouts this season and also ranks 25th nationally in walks allowed per nine innings (3.33).
  • Sam Murchison leads the Spartans in total strikeouts with 28, which ranks 48th nationally.
  • Jay Miller is second on the team with 27 punchouts. He struck out 10 batters on March 1 vs. Pitt, marking a new career-high.
  • Left-handed pitcher Noah Chapman is third on the Spartans with 25 strikeouts.
  • Murchison leads UNCG in wins with a 3-1 record, which, based on victories, stands tied for 20th in NCAA Division I.
  • The Spartans set a new season-high for runs (13) and hits (11) on March 2 vs. Pitt at home. UNCG matched the benchmark for hits on Sunday with 11 knocks against Radford in the finale.
  • Junior infielder Jeremy Wolf is leading the Spartans with a .283 (13-for-46) batting average. He doubled and tripled for UNCG in Sunday's finale vs. Radford.
  • Senior outfielder Zachary Walsh leads the team with two home runs.
  • Four different Spartans are tied for the team lead in RBI at six, junior Branton Jernigan is among them.   • Freshman Parker Wight leads the team with 20 total bases.
  • In the field, UNCG ranks 82nd in NCAA Division I with 11 double plays turned so far.
  • The Spartans are coming off a historic season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
  • UNCG captured its third Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season Championship behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
  • Entering the SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
  • UNCG led the SoCon a season ago in ERA (5.19), fewest runs allowed (297) and lowest opponent batting average (.267).
  • The Spartans were voted to finish first in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • UNCG collected three first-place votes and 40 points to finish on top of the SoCon's Preseason Poll. Samford was a close second, receiving three first-place votes and 38 points.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Rob Ready was named one of two SoCon Preseason Pitchers of the Year by the league. The other was Michael Harpster of ETSU.
  • In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Rob Ready (SP), Luke Holland (OF), Trey Truitt (DH) and Grant Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Hunter Shuey (SP) and Danny Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
  • Chapman is also back after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
  • The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.
  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his second year at the helm of the UNCG baseball program after leading the Spartans last season, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, to a regular season championship.
  • He was named the 2024 SoCon Coach of the Year and had an interim tag removed following the season on May 28.
  • Ellis has been at UNCG since he was first hired as assistant coach in the fall of 2022, leading the charge in recruiting and as the outfield coach before being promoted to interim head coach in January 2024 and head coach in May 2024.

 
SCOUTING HIGH POINT

  • High Point is 12-4 overall to begin the season and coming off a three-game series sweep at home against Stonehill College, winning 11-4, 21-9 and 11-6.
  • The Panthers have three hitters who have played in 15 or more games this season that are batting over .400. They are: Jackson Melton (.490), Konni Durschlag (.468) and Landen Johnson (.456).
  • The Panthers rank seventh in the country with 33 home runs. Eleven different student-athletes have contributed at least one home run this year.
  • High Point ranks ninth in the nation with a .589 slugging percentage.
  • On the mound, Wade Walton has been the Panthers' go-to arm. He leads the team with 24.1 innings pitched, 29 strikeouts and a 1.85 ERA. He owns a 3-1 record and has one complete game in his four starts.
  • Joey Tutoilmondo has the team's only two saves under his belt.
  • High Point was voted to finish first in the Big South after winning the league's 2024 tournament title.
  • The Panthers competed in the Clemson Regional during the NCAA Tournament last season and went 2-1 with a win in their second game against Vanderbilt, 10-9, on June 1, 2024.
  • Head Coach Joey Hammond is in his fourth season at the helm of High Point's baseball program.

SERIES HISTORY VS. HIGH POINT
The Spartans are 31-14 in the all-time series against High Point. UNCG has also won five straight meetings between the two as well as in 11 of the past 13 matchups.

Last season's series saw the Spartans prevail, 13-7, at High Point on March 5 before winning 13-0 in seven innings at home on April 24.

The Spartans will return home to host another non-conference weekend series against crosstown rival North Carolina A&T from Friday to Sunday. The series will begin with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
