Baseball Gets Set for Five Home Games Next Six Days

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team plays five games at home this week, starting with games against No. 19 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday and High Point on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium.Following the midweek tests, the Spartans will resume competition in The Southern Conference (SoCon) when The Citadel comes to town for a three-game weekend set. Game times for the series are 4:00 p.m. Friday, 7:00 p.m. Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

All regular season baseball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Baseball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST WEEK FOR THE SPARTANS

  • After having a midweek game against Campbell canceled due to rain, the Spartans were swept over the weekend in SoCon action on the road at Mercer.
  • UNCG was shutout in game one, 3-0, lost game two, 9-1, and fell in the finale, 7-4, against the Bears at OrthoGeorgia Park in Macon, Georgia.
  • Luke Jenkins batted .400 (4-for-10) to lead the Spartans in the series at Mercer. He had one double and an RBI.
  • Luke Holland led UNCG with two RBI thanks to a two-run home run in Sunday's contest.
  • Jacob Dilley also homered on Sunday. He tied for the team lead with Jenkins at four hits while pacing the squad with seven total bases in the series.
  • The Spartans' pitching staff had the edge over Mercer in strikeout, 26-23.
  • Jay Miller struck out seven on Sunday in 4.2 innings of work.
  • In relief of Miller, Noah Chapman took the mound and pitched the final 3.1 innings with just one hit, one run and one walk allowed while striking out five.
  • Sam Murchison was second in the series with six strikeouts on Friday night.
  • UNCG's pitchers held the Bears' batters to a .260 average over the weekend.

SCOUTING UNCG

  • The Spartans own an overall record of 18-24 with a 7-5 mark in the SoCon. They are tied for fourth with The Citadel at a .583 conference winning percentage.
  • UNCG is 40th in the country with three shutouts this season.
  • The Spartans stand at 35th in strikeout-to-walk-ratio (2.51), 41st in walks allowed per nine innings (3.70) and 44th in sacrifice bunts (27).
  • A threat to steal, UNCG also ranks 66th nationally in stolen bases per game (1.74) and 68th in total stolen bases (73).
  • Miller leads the Spartans with 67 strikeouts this season, which ranks 69th in NCAA Division I.
  • Murchison is second on the team with 66 strikeouts while Danny Thompson Jr. is third with 63 so far this season.
  • Thompson Jr. leads the Spartans and is 69th in the country with a 2.95 ERA and .211 opponent batting average in 42.2 innings pitched. He is also 12th nationally by averaging 13.29 strikeouts per nine innings and leads UNCG with four saves this season.
  • Chapman is fourth on the Spartans with 58 strikeouts and ranks 21st in NCAA Division I with a 5.80 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • Murchison leads UNCG in wins with a 5-4 record.
  • The Spartans matched a season-high for runs (13) a third time this season on April 19 at USC Upstate in an 18-13 setback.
  • UNCG previously plated 13 runs on March 29 at VMI in a 13-12 victory as well as on March 2 vs. Pitt in a 13-11 win at home.
  • When scoring 10 or more runs this season, UNCG is 4-1.
  • Wolf leads the Spartans with a .303 (47-for-155) batting average and 31 runs scored. He is also third on the team with 17 RBI.
  • Freshman Parker Wight leads UNCG with eight home runs and 23 RBI.
  • Holland is tied for second on the team with Dilley at five home runs.
  • UNCG faced four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents earlier in the season, amounting to eight-straight games from Feb. 18-March 4. The Spartans went 3-5 during the stretch.
  • The Spartans opened the eight-straight games against ACC foes with an upset over then-No. 13 Wake Forest at home, 4-0, on Feb. 18.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish first in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Rob Ready was named one of two SoCon Preseason Pitchers of the Year by the league. The other was Michael Harpster of ETSU.
  • In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Ready (SP), Trey Truitt (DH), Holland (OF) and Grant Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Hunter Shuey (SP) and Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
  • Chapman is back as well after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
  • The Spartans are coming off a historic season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
  • UNCG captured its third SoCon Regular Season Championship behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
  • Entering the SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
  • UNCG led the SoCon a season ago in ERA (5.19), fewest runs allowed (297) and lowest opponent batting average (.267).
  • The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.
  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his second year at the helm of the UNCG baseball program after leading the Spartans last season, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, to a regular season championship.
  • He was named the 2024 SoCon Coach of the Year and had an interim tag removed following the season on May 28.
  • Ellis has been at UNCG since he was first hired as assistant coach in the fall of 2022, leading the charge in recruiting and as the outfield coach before being promoted to interim head coach in January 2024 and head coach in May 2024.

SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS

  • Ranked No. 19 nationally in the D1Baseball.com Top 25 Poll, Coastal Carolina owns an overall record of 33-11 and stands at the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 17-4 league mark.
  • The Chanticleers swept a three-game series over the weekend at James Madison, winning 9-2 in 11 innings on Friday, 14-4 in seven innings on Saturday and 8-4 on Sunday.
  • Coastal Carolina ranks ninth nationally with a 3.63 team ERA and 11th with a 1.25 WHIP.
  • Ty Dooley is pacing the Chanticleers offensively, batting .325 (38-for-117) in 38 games with 37 starts. He leads the team with a .521 slugging percentage.
  • Caden Bodine was named to the Golden Spikes Watch List prior to the season, which marks the first step in the process of determining the best amateur baseball player in the country. He is batting .316 (50-for-158) and is one of three Chants who has yet to miss a game this season.
  • Right-handed pitcher Luke Jones is expected to make his seventh start of the season on Tuesday in Greensboro. In 11 appearances and 33 innings pitched, Jones owns a 3.27 ERA and .210 opponent batting average with 26 strikeouts and 16 walks.
  • Left-handed pitcher Dominick Carbone leads the Chants with four saves this season. He has 33 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched.
  • Coastal Carolina was selected to finish fourth with a pair of first-place votes in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Chanticleers' 2024 campaign ended with a 36-25 overall record and 16-14 mark in league play.
  • Coastal Carolina officially named Kevin Schnall as the school's sixth head baseball coach on June 10, 2024.
  • Schnall took the reins from Gary Gilmore, who retired after the 2024 campaign following a 29-year career at the helm for the Chants.
  • Schnall played catcher for the Chanticleers from 1995-99 and was hired by his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2001. He coached at Coastal from 2001-12 before returning to CCU in 2016 to help guide the Chanticleers to a national championship in his first season back on staff.

SERIES HISTORY VS. COASTAL CAROLINA
The Spartans are 12-6 in the all-time series against Coastal Carolina. UNCG faced the Chanticleers last season in Conway, South Carolina, and fell 15-9 at Springs Brooks Stadium.

UNCG won 14-2 in seven innings during the last game that was played between the two on May 11, 2022, at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS

  • High Point is 30-14 overall and 11-4 in the Big South for a tie for first with USC Upstate.
  • The Panthers are coming off a home series sweep over Wofford, winning 13-1 in seven innings on Saturday before claiming 9-3 and 15-6 victories in a doubleheader on Sunday.
  • High Point is second in the nation for home runs (101) and home runs per game (2.30).
  • High Point is led offensively by Konni Durschlag, who is batting .444 (75-for-169) and leads the team with 64 runs scored this season.
  • Brayden Simpson is pacing the Panthers with 17 home runs, 62 RBI and 135 total bases so far.
  • Wade Walton has been a force on the mound for High Point, owning a 3.82 ERA and .228 opponent average in 63.2 innings of work. He also leads the team with 71 strikeouts.
  • Joey Tutoilmondo leads the team with three saves under his belt.
  • High Point was voted to finish first in the Big South after winning the league's 2024 tournament title.
  • The Panthers competed in the Clemson Regional during the NCAA Tournament last season and went 2-1 with a win in their second game against Vanderbilt, 10-9, on June 1, 2024.
  • Head Coach Joey Hammond is in his fourth season at the helm of High Point's baseball program.

SERIES HISTORY VS. HIGH POINT
The Spartans are 32-14 in the all-time series against High Point. UNCG has also won six-straight meetings between the two as well as in 12 of the past 14 matchups.

UNCG defeated High Point, 12-10, earlier this season on March 11 at Williard Stadium.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

  • The Citadel is 23-19 overall and tied with UNCG at 7-5 in the SoCon.
  • The Bulldogs have now won four games in a row after sweeping VMI at home over the weekend, 5-0, 4-2 and 11-8.
  • The Citadel stands at fourth in NCAA DI with 46 sacrifice bunts this season, which leads the SoCon.
  • The Bulldogs' pitching staff has also tossed four shutouts this season, which ranks 19th in the nation.
  • A two-way threat for the Bulldogs this season, Anthony Hausner leads the Bulldogs with a .315 (23-for-73) batting average this season. He also owns a 6.75 ERA and .229 opponent batting average while leading pitchers with five saves this season.
  • Travis Elliott leads the Bulldogs with 29 RBI and 43 hits. He is also tied for the team lead with 53 total bases.
  • Lane Tobin paces the team with three home runs this season.
  • Phillips Daniels leads the team in runs (31), doubles (10) and walks (21).
  • The Bulldogs finished last season with a 21-32 record overall as well as a 3-18 mark in league play for last in the SoCon.
  • The Citadel was voted to finish seventh in this season's SoCon Baseball Preseason Poll.
  • Elliott was named to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team as a second baseman.
  • Head Coach Russell Triplett is in his first season at the helm of The Citadel's baseball program. He previously served as the head coach at Newberry College for 14 seasons, amassing an overall record of 418-278-1.

The Spartans are 48-38 in the all-time series facing The Citadel.

UNCG has won four-straight meetings against The Citadel, which includes sweeping last season's three-game series from May 3-5 in Charleston, South Carolina, 4-1, 8-5 in 11 innings and 3-0.
