Baseball Dominates Wofford in Series-Opening Doubleheader
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won 9-2 and 11-1 in seven innings over the Wofford Terriers while opening a three-game Southern Conference (SoCon) weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans outhit the Terriers, 20-5, during the doubleheader while getting brilliant starting pitcher performances from Sam Murchison in game one and Jay Miller in game two. Both right-handers opened their outings with four complete no-hit shutout innings.
GAME ONE: UNCG 9, WOFFORD 2
The Spartans piled on five runs in the bottom half of the first inning to get things started. After Jeremy Wolf reached on a throwing error on the game's first pitch, Parker Wight launched a two-run home run out to right-center to make it 2-0. Then with two outs, Luke Jenkins singled up the middle and Branton Jernigan drew a walk before Jacob Budzik gave UNCG a 5-0 advantage with a three-run homer to left.
UNCG scored two more runs in the second inning when the bases loaded for Jacob Dilley, who grounded into a fielder's choice to allow Wolf to score from third. Jenkins then singled through the right side in the next at-bat, which plated Jose Perez and made it 7-0.
A fielding error by Wofford in the third inning granted UNCG another run when Budzik scored to extend it to an 8-0 lead.
Wofford pushed its first runs across with one in the sixth and seventh innings, but UNCG still found itself on top by an 8-2 margin.
The Spartans scored their final run of the first game in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-2. The run came in courtesy of a sacrifice fly hit to left-center so Branton Jernigan could jog in from third.
In relief, Noah Chapman went out to the mound to get the Spartans out of a jam in the seventh and went on to finish the contest. He pitched the final 2.1 innings while allowing no hits, runs or walks and striking out three. To secure the 9-2 victory in game one.
