Men’s Tennis to Compete at Mercer Sunday Before Hosting UNC Asheville Tuesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team is set to face the Mercer Bears in Macon, Georgia, on Sunday before playing host to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Tuesday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team is set to face the Mercer Bears in Macon, Georgia, on Sunday before playing host to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Tuesday.

The Spartans' dual against Mercer at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday will mark the second to last one on The Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season schedule for UNCG. Tuesday's test against the Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m. will be non-conference play at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is 8-11 overall and 2-3 in the SoCon.
  • The last time the Spartans hit the eight-win plateau was during the 2017-18 season when UNCG finished 11-11 and 4-3 in the conference.
  • The Spartans are coming off a 6-1 setback on the road against Samford in SoCon action.
  • Prior to that, the Spartans got their last win, 4-3, on March 27 while hosting North Carolina A&T at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
  • All eight of the Spartans' wins this season have come at home. UNCG is 8-3 at home and 0-8 on the road.
  • William Elmers and John Gabelic are leading the Spartans in doubles with a team-best 6-4 record.
  • Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz are 7-12 so far while competing in doubles.
  • Tymofiy Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson own a 3-7 mark together in doubles this season.
  • As individuals in doubles, Elmers and Gabelic are the best on the team with 10-7 and 9-7 records, respectively.
  • Moskowitz leads the Spartans with a 13-6 record in singles.
  • Gabelic and Black are tied for the second-best singles records so far at 9-10 each.
  • Khrystyuk is 8-11 in singles while Elmers is close behind at 6-11.
  • Black and Moskowitz were ranked No. 79 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Doubles Rankings on Dec. 5, 2024.
  • Black and Moskowitz teamed up to post a 7-0 record and six points for their first national ranking in either singles or doubles. The duo earned its seven wins during the fall season, with a pair during the UNCG Fall Invitational, three at the Davidson Fall Invitational and two more during the Spartan Fall Invitational.
  • The Spartans played in five different tournaments this past fall including the UNCG Fall Invitational, Davidson Fall Invitational, ITA Regional Championships, Spartan Fall Invitational and Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
  • Last season's men's tennis squad finished 6-16 overall with an 0-7 mark in the SoCon.
  • The season ended with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded ETSU in the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
  • Khrystyuk paced the team in singles with a 9-10 record. Gabelic was right behind him with a 9-12 record for the season.
  • Khrystyuk and Thomson led the way for the Spartans in doubles play with a 5-6 record and 2-2 mark in the SoCon.
  • The Spartans have five returning juniors on their roster this season as well as three freshmen (Elmers, Eric Lindemann and Alan Trbonja) who are in their first year at UNCG.
  • Head Coach Jeff Trivette is in his 25th season with UNCG Tennis.

SCOUTING THE BEARS

  • Mercer owns an overall record of 9-6 with a perfect 4-0 record in the conference and riding a five-match win streak with the last four all coming in league play.
  • The Bears last match was on the road at Furman, where Mercer won by a 4-1 margin.
  • The Bears are led in doubles by the tandems of Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux as well as Hod'Abalo Isak and Amen Prince Gandonou, who are 20-7 and 20-9, respectively.
  • Mercer is led in singles by Padio, who grasps a 19-10 record.
  • Last season saw the Bears finish 7-13 overall with a 4-3 mark in SoCon action.
  • Their season ended with a first-round loss, 4-1, facing Chattanooga in the SoCon Tournament.
  •  Head Coach Eric Hayes is at the helm of both the men's and women's programs at Mercer. He took over at Mercer prior to the 2013-14 campaign.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

  • UNC Asheville is 10-7 overall with a 1-1 mark competing in the Big South this season.
  • The Bulldogs are coming off a 4-3 win over Presbyterian on Thursday in Asheville.
  • Their upcoming match against the Spartans will be their second-to-last test of the regular season.
  • Griffin Lovern has held it down in doubles for the Bulldogs, owning a record of 9-4 when playing in doubles regardless of who his partner is.
  • Freddy Murray owns the team's best singles record at 11-5 this season.
  • The Bulldogs won last year's Big South Championship before falling to No. 13 Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Durham, North Carolina.
  • Matt Frost is the head coach of UNC Asheville's men's tennis program. He is in his second season at the helm.
