Women’s Soccer Hosts No. 24 Liberty in Final Non-Conference Regular Season Game

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team concludes its non-conference regular season slate by hosting No. 24 Liberty on Sunday, Sept.  15 with a start time of 1:00 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
UNCG holds the edge in the overall series, 7-3. The last time the two teams met was on August 25, 2022, when UNCG shutout Liberty, 1-0, in Greensboro. The Lady Flames took the contest before on Sept. 19, 2021 in Lynchburg, Virginia, 2-0.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
Coastal Carolina defeated UNCG, 2-0, on Thursday night at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium. After the Chanticleers scored two goals in the first half, the Spartans kept them scoreless. Emma Malone and Morgan Shively split time in net for the Spartans, each recording two saves.  
 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • Head Coach Stefani Workman is in her first year at the helm of the Spartans and eighth year overall with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Spartans added six freshmen and one graduate transfer to the 2024 roster.
  • Malone was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3. This was her first career weekly award.
  • This was the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 28, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.
  • Taylor Mentzer currently leads the Spartans with two goals scored this season.
  • Kiss is second on the team with three points (1 G, 1 A) and Brubaker is third on the team with one goal.
  • Ryen Ortiz has chipped in an assist this season.
  • The Spartans have outmatched opponents in corner kicks this season, 33-24, and shots, 68-62.

SCOUTING LIBERTY

  • Liberty was voted to take home the title in the 2024 Conference USA (CUSA) Preseason Poll.
  • Ivy Garner was voted the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Sallie Garner was voted the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Along with the Garners, Ainsley Leja and Ava Goodman were also voted to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Leja was named a United Soccer Coaches Player to Watch for the second-straight year.
  • The Lady Flames defeated then-ranked No. 21 Virginia Tech, 2-1, for their first-ever ranked win.
  • The victory led to the Lady Flames being ranked No. 24, their first-ever national ranking.
  • Three of the Lady Flames' wins have come in shutout fashion, including their most recent 6-0 victory over George Mason.
  • Liberty is outscoring opponents 24-6 and have outmatched foes 58-25 in corner kicks.
  • Halle Engle is pacing the team with seven goals, one assist and four game-winning goals for 15 points.
  • Gabby Miranda is second on the team with nine points (4 G, 1 A).
  • In net, Grace Workman's 0.200 goals against average and 0.923 save percentage is ninth in the nation.
  • Liberty is pacing the CUSA in corner kicks per game (6.44), goal differential (18), goals against average (0.667), points per game (7.67), scoring offense (2.67), shots per game (14.44), total assists (21), total goals (24), total points (69) and won-lost-tied percentage (0.944).
