Volleyball Begins Elon Invitational with 3-1 Win Over NC Central

ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team claimed a 3-1 victory over North Carolina Central (25-13, 25-13, 22-25, 25-21) in its first game of the Elon Invitational on Friday at Schar Center in Elon, North Carolina.

ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team claimed a 3-1 victory over North Carolina Central (25-13, 25-13, 22-25, 25-21) in its first game of the Elon Invitational on Friday at Schar Center in Elon, North Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A kill from Allie Sweet, set by Izora Gragg gave the Spartans the first point of the match and UNCG never allowed North Carolina Central to lead in the first set. With UNCG holding a five-point lead over the Eagles, the Spartans tallied an 8-2 run to secure set one, 25-13.
 
UNCG continued its momentum into the second set by starting things off with a 6-2 run over the Eagles. Three consecutive points from the Spartans gave the squad the second game, 25-13.
 
The Spartans started off in control of the third set by notching a 5-0 run. The Eagles were able to come back and tie the game on a couple of occasions before taking their first lead of the match (16-15). North Carolina Central was able to tally a 6-1 run to earn the third set, 25-22.
 
UNCG regained its stride in the fourth set by starting off with a 7-1 advantage over the Eagles, never allowing North Carolina Central to lead in the final set. One last kill from Sweet gave the Spartans the fourth game, 25-21 for the 3-1 win over the Eagles.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Sweet led both teams with 23 kills, marking her second time this season with 20 or more kills.
  • McKenna Timmerman followed closely behind with 15 kills on the day.
  • Gragg paced both teams as the setter with 41 assists.  
  • America Anderson and Emily Hanlon led the way with six total blocks apiece. Anderson's six blocks matched her career high, while Hanlon's was a new career high.
  • Sydney Harrington led the team with a new career high of three service aces.
  • Chloe Nussbaum paced the match as the libero with 12 digs.

The Spartans will return to Schar Center on Saturday to close out the Elon Invitational with Murray State at 1:00 p.m. and Elon at 7:00 p.m. in Elon, North Carolina.
