Women’s Basketball Set for 2024 Puerto Rico Clasico

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will head to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the 2024 Puerto Rico Classico on Thursday and Friday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will head to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the 2024 Puerto Rico Classico on Thursday and Friday.
 
The Spartans will face UTSA on Thursday and Le Moyne on Friday. Both games are set for an 11:00 a.m. ET/12:00 p.m. AT tip-off in Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum.

SERIES HISTORY VS UTSA/LE MOYNE
This will be the first meeting in program history for UNCG against both UTSA and Le Moyne.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG most recently picked up its first road win of the season after defeating South Carolina State, 53-35, in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
  • Jayde Gamble and Jaila Lee led the game in scoring with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
  • Gamble paced the game with 16 points, five steals and two dimes.
  • Khalis Cain led the game with eight rebounds.
  • Nya Smith followed closely behind with a new career-best six boards.
  • UNCG bested South Carolina State in points in the paint (42-18), points off turnovers (27-15), second chance points (19-5), fast break points (10-9) and bench points (14-10).

 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG heads to Puerto Rico with a 6-1 overall mark on the 2024-25 season.
  • The Spartans are currently undefeated at home (5-0).
  • UNCG is ninth in the country with a 47.6 scoring defense average.
  • The Spartans are pacing The Southern Conference (SoCon) in four categories: field goal percentage (44.2), scoring defense (47.6), scoring margin (20.1) and winning percentage (85.7).
  • Gamble is leading the league with 93 points. In addition, she is 11th in the country with 20 steals.
  • Cain is 21st nationally and first in the SoCon with 4.4 offensive rebounds per game. 
  • UNCG is beating its opponents in just about every statistical category: scoring (474-333), points per game (67.7-47.6), field goals (178-126), three-pointers (41-29), free throws (77-52), rebounds (261-208), assists (81-60), points off turnovers (21.1-11.4), steals (77-48) and blocks (13-9).
  • The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play during the 2023-24 season.
  • UNCG appeared in the SoCon Championship for the seventh time in program history last season, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60.
  • The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.
  • Three of last year's starters have returned this season in Cain, Gamble and Nia Howard.
  • Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold.

SCOUTING UTSA

  • The Roadrunners come into Thursday's contest with a 4-1 overall record.
  • Just like the Spartans, the Roadrunners are on a four-game winning streak.
  • UTSA most recently claimed a 62-43 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
  • UTSA's sole loss this season came in College Station to Texas A&M on Thursday, Nov. 7, 55-51.
  • The 'Runners are leading The American Athletic Conference in free throw percentage (74.2) and rebound margin (9.6).
  • Jordyn Jenkins stands out nationally at 14th in double-doubles (3), 15th in free throws (35) and ninth in points per game (22.0).
  • Jenkins paces The American in field goal percentage (53.6), field goals (37), free throws (35), points (110) and points per game (22.0).
  • Nina De Leon Negron stands out from behind the arc at 20th in the country with a 53.3 three-point percentage.
  • UTSA is besting its opponents in scoring (340-301), field goals (121-109), rebounding (187-139), assists (67-52) and steals (41-35).
  • UTSA was picked to finish fifth in the 2024-25 American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll.
  • Jenkins was selected to the Preseason All-Conference First Team.
  • UTSA will face Towson on Friday to conclude the 2024 Puerto Rico Classico.

 
SCOUTING LE MOYNE

  • The Dolphins head to Puerto Rico with an 0-5 start on the 2024-25 season.
  • In its last time out, Le Moyne fell to No. 22 Illinois on Monday, Nov. 18 in Champaign, Illinois, 94-25.
  • Headyn Roberts is leading the team with 52 points and  10.4 points per game. 
  • Roberts also leads the squad with 41 rebounds.
  • Eli Clark, Mia Yanogacio and Roberts are leading the team with eight three-pointers apiece.
  • Clark is best passer on the team with nine assists.
  • Emily Florvil stands out with eight steals.
  • The Dolphins returned seven players from the 2023-24 squad and added four transfer student-athletes along with two freshmen.
  • Le Moyne was picked to finish third in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Dolphins will face Southern Indiana on Saturday in San Juan before heading back to Syracuse, New York.
