Women’s Basketball Drops Contest at No. 14 North Carolina, 80-56

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped a contest to No. 14 North Carolina, 80-56 on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at Carmichael Arena.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped a contest at No. 14 North Carolina, 80-56 on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at Carmichael Arena.
 
Jaila Lee and Nya Smith led the Spartans in scoring with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
A layup by Khalis Cain, coming from Nia Howard at 8:56 gave the Spartans the first lead of the contest, 2-0. The Tar Heels responded with four points to take the 4-2 lead. The first quarter remained close, tying on two more occasions. After Lee chipped in a layup at 2:03, North Carolina closed out the first frame with two field goals for the 20-15 lead.
 
Smith started off the scoring in the second quarter with a three-pointer at 9:24. However, the Tar Heels were able to control the momentum for the remainder of the first half, outscoring the Spartans, 24-14 in the second quarter. Yacine N'Diaye recorded a jumper in the paint to close out the first half, but North Carolina held the 44-29 advantage, heading to the locker room. 
 
At the start of the third quarter, North Carolina recorded six unanswered points to get out to a 50-29 lead. A layup from Jayde Gamble at 7:17 gave the Spartans their first point of the second half. The third quarter stayed evenly matched with both teams scoring 13 points apiece. N'Diaye scored the final jumper of the third stanza for both teams to head to the bench with the Tar Heels holding the 57-42 lead.
 
North Carolina began the fourth quarter with a 4-0 run. Smith later responded with a three-point play to make the score 61-45. The Tar Heels were able to close out the contest with seven consecutive points for the 80-56 win.

  • Lee led the team with two three-pointers.
  • N'Diaye recorded new career-bests of seven points, six boards and three free-throws.
  • Smith posted a new career-high of three assists.
  • Gamble led the Spartans with four dimes.
