Coastal Carolina Outlasts Women’s Basketball, 69-62

CONWAY, S.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped its first road contest of the season in a non-conference battle with Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night, 62-69, in Conway, South Carolina, at the HTC Center.

Jaila Lee and Jayde Gamble both reached double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Layups from Nia Howard and Tasia Johnson put UNCG up 4-0 in Wednesday night's contest. The Spartans were able to hold the advantage until the Chanticleers tallied eight straight points for the 15-13 lead. Both teams went into the break with Coastal Carolina holding the two-point lead, 17-15.
 
After the Chanticleers' Jayden Marable started the second frame with a layup, Gamble and Johnson chipped in two three-pointers and Makiah Asidanya added an easy layup to regain the Spartans' lead, 23-19. With one possession left for the Spartans and the clock winding down in the first half, Howard notched two more points for the Spartans to head to the locker room on top, 34-30.
 
The Spartans continued to maintain the lead in the early goings of the third quarter until Coastal Carolina went on a late run. With the Spartans in control, 48-43, the Chanticleers posted 10 consecutive points to lead at the end of the third frame, 53-48.
 
Despite the Chanticleers holding the advantage for the remainder of the matchup, at 6:48, Kristina Rakotobe posted up for a layup to make it a two-possession game, 59-53. In addition, with 27 seconds left in the game, Kelly Boyle drew a foul to chip in both at the charity stripe to make it a five-point game, 65-60. Coastal Carolina added two more free-throws and a layup to make the score 69-60. However, Gamble ended the scoring with one final bucket to conclude the game at 69-62, going the way for the Chanticleers.

  • In her first start as a Spartan, Johnson matched her career-best with eight points.
  • Johnson earned a new career-high of four boards and added three dimes.
  • Boyle went a perfect 4-for-4 in free-throws, for a new career-high and chipped in nine points.
  • Howard paced the Spartans with two steals.
  • Khalis Cain led the squad with eight boards.
  • Rakotobe posted a career-high of seven rebounds.
