Women’s Basketball Earns 64-54 Victory Over Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team earned a 64-54 victory over Furman in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play Saturday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.

GREENVILLE, S.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team earned a 64-54 victory over Furman in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play Saturday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
Tasia Johnson led the Spartans by registering a career-best 13 points and eight rebounds. Jayde Gamble and Nya Smith rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Spartans with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Furman won the tip-off, Tate Walters got the scoring started with a layup at 9:56. Jaila Lee responded with a three-pointer on the other end to give UNCG the 3-2 lead. Furman scored again on a jumper at 8:26 before Smith launched a three-pointer at the top of the key for the 6-4 advantage. The Paladins bounced back with five-straight points for the 9-6 lead. Furman held the lead for the remainder of the first frame despite Johnson recording a three-pointer with two seconds remaining, cutting the Spartans deficit to four, 15-11.
 
The Spartans got out to a 10-2 run over the Paladins to start the second stanza for the 21-17 lead. UNCG maintained the advantage for the remainder of the game. The Blue & Gold held the one-point lead going into the locker room, 28-27.
 
UNCG came out of the locker to post another 10-2 run over Furman for the 38-29 lead. After Makiah Asidanya recorded a three-pointer at 5:50, 43-31, neither team scored a field goal for most of the remainder of the frame. Every point for the next 4:02 came at the charity stripe. With eight seconds left, Walters recorded a layup, but UNCG remained on top, 49-39.
 
The Spartans and Paladins went back-and-forth until 2:48 was left, when UNCG notched eight consecutive points for its largest lead of the game, 62-49. A couple free throws from Asidanya, following a layup from Walters concluded the 64-54 win for the Spartans.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Lee led the Spartans with a career-best five assists.
  • Lee and Gamble paced the squad with two steals apiece.
  • Johnson and Khalis Cain led the way with eight boards each.
  • UNCG shot 41.6 percent from behind the arc, going 10-for-21.
  • The Spartans bested the Paladins in points off turnovers (14-7) and bench points (18-6).
