Women’s Basketball to Face No. 14 North Carolina in Chapel Hill

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will snap an 11-day break to take on No. 14 North Carolina on Wednesday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at Carmichael Arena.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team returns to action after an 11-day break to take on No. 14 North Carolina on Wednesday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at Carmichael Arena.
 

SERIES HISTORY
North Carolina leads 14-5 in the overall series. The Tar Heels took last season's meeting, 81-66 in Chapel Hill. The last time UNCG defeated North Carolina was in the 1973-74 season, 66-64.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG most recently went 1-1 at the 2024 Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan.
  • The Spartans fell to UTSA, 53-62, on Thursday, Nov. 28, but earned a dominating victory over Le Moyne, 83-61, on Friday, Nov. 29.
  • Jayde Gamble led the Spartans with two double figure games, scoring 34 points for a 17.0 points per game average over the two games.
  • Gamble notched a new season-high of 20 points against Le Moyne.
  • Twelve different Spartans scored in the team's win over the Dolphins.

 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG currently sits 7-2 overall for its best start since the 1998-99 season when the team started off 8-2.
  • The Spartans are undefeated at home with a 5-0 mark in Fleming Gym.
  • The Blue & Gold stand atop The Southern Conference (SoCon) in seven categories: field goal percentage (43.7), scoring defense (50.7), scoring margin (17.1), three-point percentage (33.5), turnover margin (5.56), turnovers forced per game (20.44) and winning percentage (77.8).
  • Among the national rankings, the Spartans are ninth in scoring defense, 43rd in bench points per game (27.8), 45th in turnover margin and 49th in scoring margin.
  • Gamble is second in the league in field goal percentage (47.0), points per game (14.1) and steals per game (2.56).
  • UNCG is besting its opponents across several categories: points (610-456), field goals (224-169), three-pointers (60-41), free throws (102-77), rebounds (306-271), assists (107-94), points off turnovers (20.3-11.2) and steals (93-59).
  • Gamble paces the team with 127 points, 47 field goals, 31 assists and 23 steals.
  • Gamble and Nya Smith stand out from behind the arc with 13 three-pointers apiece.
  • Jaila Lee paces the squad at the charity stripe with 25 free throws for a 71.4 free throw percentage.
  • Khalis Cain leads the Spartans defensively with 59 boards and six blocks.
  • The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play during the 2023-24 season.
  • UNCG appeared in the SoCon Championship for the seventh time in program history last season, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60.
  • The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.
  • Three of last year's starters have returned this season in Cain, Gamble and Nia Howard.
  • Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold.

SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA

  • No. 14 North Carolina comes into Wednesday's contest with a 9-1 overall record on the 2024-25 season.
  • The Tar Heels are on a six-game win streak with most recently notching wins over No. 14 Kentucky, 72-53, on Thursday and Coppin State, 72-46 on Sunday in Chapel Hill.  
  • North Carolina is the only team that UNCG will face this season that earned a spot in the 2023-24 NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels squeaked past Michigan State, 59-56, in round one, but fell to South Carolina in the second round, 88-41.
  • UNC concluded the 2023-24 season with a 20-13 overall record and 11-7 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
  • Graduate standout Alyssa Ustby earned a spot on the Preseason All-ACC Team.
  • Ustby is 26th in the country with 93 rebounds and 45th with three double-doubles this season.
  • She leads the squad with 113 points, 45 field goals, 16 free throws, 93 rebounds and 30 assists.
  • Lexi Donarski stands out from the three-point line with 21 threes this season.
  • Blanca Thomas and Indya Nivar lead the Tar Heels defensively with 11 blocks and 18 steals, respectively.
  • Currently standing in seventh place in the league, North Carolina was picked to finish sixth in the ACC Women's Basketball Predicted Order of Finish.
  • The Tar Heels stand out nationally in several statistical categories: scoring defense (3rd/48.8), field goal percentage defense (7th/32.2), assist/turnover ratio (14th/1.36), winning percentage (14th/90.0), three-point percentage defense (20th/24.1), defensive rebounds per game (24th/29.7), turnover margin (28th/6.80), scoring margin (29th/24.4), bench points per game (30th/29.9), three-pointers per game (32nd/8.6) and blocks per game (35th/4.8). 
  • Following their game against the Spartans, the Tar Heels will begin ACC play with No. 25 Georgia Tech on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
