Women’s Golf Accepts Invite to National Golf Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf team has accepted an invite to a postseason tournament in the National Golf Invitational, held at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club from May 9-11 in Maricopa, Arizona.
The tournament, presented by Golfweek, is in its third year. However, this will mark UNCG's first trip to the tournament.
"We are very excited to be playing a postseason event," said UNCG Head Coach Ashley Leonard. "The team has worked very hard this year and to have it pay off with an invite to golf's NIT is a great step forward for our program."
The Spartans are coming off a fourth-place finish at The Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship last week. It was their best showing in a conference tournament since the 2013 SoCon Championship, when they finished third with a final score of 39-over-par (903). It also marked UNCG's eighth time placing fifth or better in its 11 total events during the 2024-25 campaign.
UNCG won its first tournament since the 2011-12 season after placing first in the Puerto Rico Shootout in Humacao, Puerto Rico, from March 4-6. The Spartans also earned a runner-up finish hosting the UNCG Collegiate from Oct. 21-22, 2024.
Senior Ava Romfo and sophomore Kasey McIlvaine were named to the All-SoCon Team while freshmen Sophie Lauture and Lulu Leetham earned spots on the SoCon All-Freshman Team, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
UNCG tied with Furman and Mercer for most student-athletes named to All-Conference Teams at four. Additionally, Chattanooga, Samford and Western Carolina each had one golfer named to the All-SoCon Team.
Further details about the National Golf Invitational will be announced at a later date.
