BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team concluded its 2024 season with a 2-1 loss to Samford on Friday evening at Shauna Yelton Field in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Quarterfinal game.
The Bulldogs entered the contest as the second seed, while the Spartans were the seventh seed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a back-and-forth gritty battle, as both teams settled into play. In the 36th minute, Samford tallied its second corner kick of the game and Ella Simpson headed it from inside the 18-yard box, but Emma Malone was there to collect her fourth save of the game. The Bulldogs went into the locker room with a 10-7 shot advantage.
In the 80th minute, Samford was called for a foul about 25 yards out. Haydan Erck took the free kick which was initially punched. Ava Kiss then headed it into the six-yard box where Rachel Poplin then volleyed it over the outstretched goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage. The Bulldogs netted the equalizer at 84:56 that nicked the underneath of the crossbar and crossed the line. With just 16 seconds left, Samford's Layton Glisson sent a left-footed laser to the back of the net for the game winner, 2-1.
