Women’s Soccer Concludes Regular Season Hosting Samford on Sunday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team is set to host Samford on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium to conclude The Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team is set to host Samford on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium to conclude The Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season.

UNCG is currently in seventh place with nine points. Samford clinched a spot in the 2025 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship with 20 points, while Western Carolina also earned a spot with 17 points. With a UNCG win and some help across the conference, the Spartans could be seeded as high as fourth.

SERIES VS. SAMFORD
Samford is leading the all-time series against UNCG, 5-14-2, with the Bulldogs claiming the last nine results. The Spartans last defeated the Bulldogs on Nov. 3, 2017, 2-1 in double overtime in Birmingham, Alabama.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
Western Carolina defeated UNCG on Sunday, 4-2, in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Ryen Ortiz scored both goals for the Spartans, as Taylor Mentzer and Mairead Gayer each recorded an assist. The Catamounts outshot the Spartans, 29-12.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • So far this season, Rina Ogimoto paces the team with 12 points (5G, 2A).
  • Ortiz is second on the team with seven points (3g, 1a).
  • Mentzer is third with five points (2g, 2a) and Ava Kiss is fourth with five points (2g, 2a).
  • Malone was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7 for her efforts to give UNCG two shutouts with a 1-0 win over Furman and a 0-0 tie to Wofford.
  • UNCG has four shutouts on the season.
  • Opponents lead the Spartans in corner kicks, 66-60, while UNCG has the edge in saves, 67-57.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 5-9-5 overall and 3-3-3 in SoCon.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning 45 points.
  • Redshirt senior midfielder Rachel Poplin was named to the 2025 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.

SCOUTING SAMFORD

  • Samford was picked to finish second in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning one first-place vote.
  • The Bulldogs concluded the 2024 season 12-7-3 overall and 6-1-2 in SoCon play.
  • Samford won its sixth SoCon Tournament title in 2024, giving the Bulldogs a bid to the program's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Samantha De Luca is pacing the team with 27 points (12g, 3a), while Martha Bishop (4g, 2a) and Sarah Holland (3g, 4a) each have 10 points.
  • De Luca is nationally ranked 11th in goals, 14th in goals per game (.75), 19th in points and 23rd in points per game (1.69).
  • In net, Peyton Hull has started and played in all 18 games, making 63 saves and giving up 13 goals for 0.81 goals against.
  • She has 10 shutouts on the season with the Bulldogs defense.
  • Nationally, the team is 12th with its .625 shutout percentage and Hull is second among Division I programs.

UP NEXT
The Spartans and the rest of the SoCon teams will learn their fate in the 2025 SoCon Tournament following the conclusion of all regular season games on Sunday.

The Tournament is set to begin on Oct. 28 with two first round games, with the highest seed hosting each contest. The quarterfinals will follow on Oct. 31, semifinals on Nov. 2 and then the championship on Nov. 8. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted at the first- and second-seeded teams.
