South Florida Defeats Women’s Soccer, 1-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team took a 1-0 loss to The University of South Florida (USF) on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team took a 1-0 loss to The University of South Florida (USF) on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
USF was quick to score in the game with Gentian Fetaj making a pass from midfield down to Hedda Ornberg. Ornberg shot the ball into the bottom right of the goal just outside the six-yard box for a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the contest. The Spartans had a couple good looks in the 23rd minute with two consecutive shots from Rachel Poplin and Ava Kiss.
 
Coming out of the break, the Spartans' offense came alive with eight shots in the second half. However, good goalkeeping and defense kept UNCG off the scoreboard with four saves, allowing South Florida to come away with the 1-0 victory.

  • The Spartans and Bulls both notched 10 shots apiece.
  • UNCG bested USF in corner kicks, 3-2.
  • Poplin led the match with three shots.
  • Ryen Ortiz followed closely behind with two shots.

The Spartans will host Triad rival, High Point on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium before traveling to Charlotte on Sunday, Sept. 7 for a 6:00 p.m. game at Transamerica Field.
