Samford Takes 2-1 Win Over Women’s Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team fell to Samford in The Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season finale, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Two minutes into the game, Samford tallied two shots, one that was saved by Emma Malone and the other hit the crossbar. In the 11th minute of action, freshman Merle Greulich set up for a free kick about 30 yards out that was struck into the hands of the Bulldogs' goalkeeper. UNCG's only corner kick of the half came in the 33rd minute and Avery Barr headed it wide left of the post for one of the Spartans' three shots.
Samford acted early in the second half and found the back of the net at 46:16. Whitaker Buchanan chipped the ball into the box and Layton Glisson volleyed the ball to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. In the 56th minute UNCG caused a scrum that saw Mel Herrera's shot stopped at the doorstep by the Bulldogs' Peyton Hull. Herrera was later pulled down in the box creating a penalty kick opportunity that Greulich buried at 81:27, netting the equalizer. With about 90 seconds remaining, Hanna Himes took a touch inside the 18-yard box and sent a strike just under the crossbar for the game-winning goal.
