Second Half Surge Sees Women’s Soccer Draw Chattanooga
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team draws The Southern Conference (SoCon) rival Chattanooga, 2-2, Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Emma Malone stopped seven shots in the game, which was the most this season since North Carolina on August 28th, with eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match started with a 50-minute weather delay as inclement weather moved into the area before kickoff. When the match started, Chattanooga took to the offensive early. In the fifth minute, the Mocs scampered past the Spartans' defense and scored a quick goal on Malone to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Chattanooga attack continued to be relentless, but Malone was up to task making four saves in the first half to keep the score just down one heading into the break.
UNCG flipped the script in the second half, with the Spartans dominating possession and advancing the ball into the attacking third. In the 54th minute, after a free kick was awarded to Taylor Mentzer, Rina Ogimoto received a pass from Mentzer outside the penalty box and laced a shot past the goalkeeper to equalize the score at 1-1. UNCG continued to mount the pressure as a deep run by a Spartan forward led to a foul in the penalty box in the 74th minute. Ogimoto took the penalty kick and was able to convert it after a deflection from the keeper to give UNCG the 2-1 lead. With that goal, Ogimoto has scored three goals in conference play with five total in the season. Chattanooga responded quickly, rushing the Spartans' defense right after the goal and was able to tie up the score 2-2 after a minute of action. The final 15 minutes of action saw three combined shots taken by both teams, but Malone steadied the UNCG defense plucking multiple crosses out of the sky and making one save to end the match in a 2-2 draw.
