Softball & NC State to Face Off in Midweek Showdown

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team concludes its five-game homestand with NC State, its second Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent, on Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team concludes its five-game homestand with NC State, its second Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent, on Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

Currently, UNCG is 26-10 overall and 4-2 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and NC State is 21-15 and 4-8 in the ACC. The two teams last faced off on February 22, 2022, in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the Wolfpack won 4-3.  

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is coming off a SoCon series sweep over Wofford, where the Spartans won 2-1 on Friday and then 6-1 and 9-8 in 11 innings on Saturday.
  • The Spartans have now won the last four of five games.
  • Kaylyn Belfield led the charge with a .500 (5-for-10) batting average, scoring two runs with eight putouts in the outfield.
  • Hadley Gardner also had five hits, swinging .417 at the plate with one RBI and one home run.
  • The Spartans totaled six home runs in the four-game week.
  • Laney Deane capped off the week with a two-run blast to walk off with a 9-8, 11-inning win over the Terriers on Saturday.
  • Salem Ward tossed 17.1 innings last week, striking out nine and keeping batters to a .258 hitting clip. She earned two victories, and one save.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

  • Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .459 batting average and has successfully stolen 11-of-13 bases.
  • Belfield is 34th nationally with her hitting clip.
  • Grace Loftin is leading the Spartans with 45 hits, swinging .398 at the plate in 36 games played with a team-high 36 RBI. She also paces the team with nine doubles, three triples and nine home runs.
  • Her 45 hits are 60th in the nation and her 36 RBI are 68th.
  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs (8th/58), home runs per game (10th/1.61), RBI (16th/235), slugging percentage (18th/.570), hits (21st/315), total runs (21st/250), RBI per game (24th/6.53), scoring (25th/6.94) and walks (25th/137).
  • Jessie Shipley is second on the team with eight homers, while Gardner, Macy Michael and Rylie Williams each have seven homers.
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with eight totaling 20 or more. Jorde Chartrand and Shipley each have 27 RBI, Meredith Harwood has 22 RBI, Samantha Beck has 21 and Williams, Michael and Gardner each have 20.
  • Salem Ward leads the pitching staff with 78 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.43 ERA and has a 12-4 record with three saves in 25 appearances.
  • Ward is nationally ranked 29th in victories, 29th in pitching appearances and 17th in saves.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • This season, the Spartans have walked off in six games: vs. Toledo (16-14), Iona (5-3), Fairfield (4-2), Radford (2-1), Wofford (2-1 and 9-8).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in 13 categories, including batting average, hits, home runs, home runs per game, on-base percentage, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs and walks.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.

RUNDOWN ON NC STATE

  • NC State finished the 2024 season 30-23 overall and 6-18 in the ACC
  • The Wolfpack were voted to finish 13th in the 2025 ACC Preseason Poll.
  • NC State is coming off three-straight losses to No. 7/8 ranked Florida State (7-4, 5-4, 6-1).
  • Michele Tarpey is pacing the team with a .400 batting average, hitting 32-for-80 with 32 runs scored and 13 RBI.
  • Tori Ensley has successfully stolen 10-of-10 bases and has a team-best 11 doubles.
  • Hannah Church is the only one from the Wolfpack with double figure home runs (14) and is leading the team with 43 RBI.
  • Her 14 homers are 10th nationally and her 43 RBI are 25th in the nation.
  • In the circle, Carly Maxton has led the pitching staff with 90.0 innings tossed in 20 appearances, totaling a 9-3 record with five shutouts and nine complete games.
  • Maxton is ranked sixth nationally in shutouts and second in the ACC.
  • The Wolfpack are leading the ACC in double plays (13).
  • NC State has 46 home runs which is 24th nationally and fifth in the ACC.

UNCG will hit the road for four games, starting with a three-game series against Furman in Greenville, South Carolina. The Paladins and Spartans will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. and then follow with a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Pepsi Stadium.
