Softball Extends Win Streak to Seven, Spartans Defeat Saint Francis & Toledo

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team extended its win streak to seven with victories over Saint Francis, 7-2, and Toledo, 16-14, on Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium to conclude the Spiro Classic.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team extended its win streak to seven with victories over Saint Francis, 7-2, and Toledo, 16-14, on Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium to conclude the Spiro Classic.
 
With the 7-2 win over Saint Francis, Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is the winningest softball coach in UNCG's history, reached 400 wins at the helm of the Spartans.
 
UNCG tallied 18 hits in the 16-14 walk-off win over Toledo. This was the most hits in a single game since the Spartans' 18 hits against Rider on Feb. 17, 2017, in a 19-1 victory. The Spartans' 16 runs were the most since a 19-1 win over Mercer on March 27, 2022.
 
The Spartans are now 8-2 this season.
 
Game 1: UNCG 7 – Saint Francis 2
 

  • Four Spartans had multi-hit games, including Jessie Shipley (2-for-3), Betsy Eatmon (2-for-3), Jorde Chartrand (2-for-2) and Samantha Beck (2-for-3).  
  • Shipley paced the team with three RBI and two doubles.
  • Meredith Harwood, who went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI had a home run.
  • Salem Ward tossed her second complete game of the season and fifth of her career, striking out seven batters, allowing five hits, giving up two earned runs and only one walk.
  • In the bottom of the first, Harwood crushed her third homer of the season, a two-run blast to left field giving UNCG a 2-0 lead.
  • The Spartans extended their lead with a sacrifice fly from Shipley that scored Chartrand for a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.
  • Saint Francis fought back in the top of the third stringing together two runs on three hits cutting the deficit to one, 3-2.
  • Eatmon hit one of the Spartans' four doubles in the game, pushing across Harwood, 4-2, in the bottom of the third.
  • Later that inning, Beck's RBI single and then Shipley's two-run double broke the game open for a 7-2 advantage.
  • Neither team was able to add another run to their scores as the Spartans secured a 7-2 victory.

Game 2: UNCG 16 – Toledo 14 (9 innings)

  • Five Spartans had multi-hit games and five tallied multiple RBI.
  • Grace Loftin went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBI and the game-winning two-run home run.
  • Eatmon went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one walk.
  • Hadley Gardner went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, one walk and her first-collegiate home run.
  • Chartrand swung 3-for-4 with three RBI, one walk and two doubles.
  • Kaylyn Belfield went 3-for-5 with one stolen base.
  • Toledo put two runs up in the top of the first, before UNCG claimed the lead with five runs on four hits for a 5-2 lead, in the bottom of the frame.
  • The Rockets came back for a 7-5 advantage on five hits in the top of the second.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Harwood crushed her fourth home run of the season, a three-run blast to center field, tying the game at 8-8.
  • Toledo put a run on the board in the fifth and two in the sixth inning for an 11-8 edge.
  • With one out and runners on first and second, Laney Deane sent a 1-0 pitch over the right center wall for her first-collegiate blast knotting the game at 11-11.
  • After a scoreless seventh inning, Toledo hit a two-run blast in the top of the eighth and UNCG's Gardner responded with a two-run homer of her own tying the game once again, 13-13.
  • The Rockets took a one-run lead, 14-13, in the top of the ninth on an RBI single.
  • With Shipley on second to start the bottom of the ninth, Beck hit a RBI double to left field matching Toledo's score, 14-14. Then Loftin connected on a 1-2 count for her third home run of the season and 32nd of her career to walk off with a 16-14 victory.
