Softball Hosts ETSU for SoCon Series Friday & Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will conclude a seven-game homestand with The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe ETSU this Friday and Saturday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will conclude a seven-game homestand with The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe ETSU this Friday and Saturday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

On Friday, the two teams will play a doubleheader with the first game starting at 1:00 p.m. and on Saturday they will play a single game with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.

Currently, the Spartans are 32-13 overall and 9-3 in the SoCon and the Buccaneers are 14-29 overall and 3-9 in the league.

The Spartans are on a nine-game win streak against the Bucs dating back to 2022.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.
 

 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG lost to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at home 14-5 in five innings.
  • Grace Loftin, Jessie Shipley and Macy Michael each hit home runs for the Spartans.
  • Loftin hit her team-leading 12th homer of the season.
  • Shipley crushed her 10th home run of the season.
  • Michael launched her eighth home run of the season.
  • Meredith Harwood went 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and two doubles.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs (8th/71), home runs per game (11th/1.58), RBI (20th/274), slugging percentage (22nd/.553) and total runs (24th/289).
  • Kaylyn Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .414 batting average and has successfully stolen 12-of-14 bases.
  • Loftin is leading the Spartans with 55 hits, swinging .399 at the plate in 45 games played with a team-high 44 RBI. She also paces the team with 12 doubles, three triples and 12 home runs.
  • Nationally, she is 54th in slugging percentage, 61st in hits and home runs and 63rd in RBI.
  • Shipley is second on the team with 10 homers and Hadley Gardner is third with nine home runs. Michael has eight homers, while Jorde Chartrand and Rylie Williams each have seven home runs.
  • Chartrand and Samantha Beck each have nine doubles and are second on the team.
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with nine totaling 20 or more. Chartrand and Shipley are second on the team with 32 RBI each.
  • Salem Ward leads the pitching staff with 80 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.72 ERA and has a 12-4 record with three saves in 29 appearances.
  • Ward is nationally ranked 31st in saves, 49th in pitching appearances and 62nd in victories.
  • Chartrand, in 23 appearances, leads the pitching staff with a 1.94 ERA in 101.0 innings pitched, totaling an 8-5 record and three saves. She has kept opponents to a .213 batting average. She is 42nd in the nation with a 1.94 ERA.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • This season, the Spartans have walked off in six games: vs. Toledo (16-14), Iona (5-3), Fairfield (4-2), Radford (2-1), Wofford (2-1 and 9-8).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in eight categories, including home runs, home runs per game, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs and total sacrifice flies.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.

RUNDOWN ON ETSU

  • Last season, ETSU finished 11-39 overall and 6-16 in the conference.
  • ETSU was voted to finish last in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Cameron Young was voted the 2025 SoCon Preseason Player of the Year after hitting .394 with 17 doubles, 23 RBI and a 1.013 OPS.
  • Brylee Mesusan and Riley Nayadley were named 2025 Preseason All-Conference Second Team honorees.
  • Young is pacing the team with a .417 batting average, swinging 53-for-127 with nine doubles, two home runs and 26 RBI.
  • Sara Muir and Leinani Lutu each have three home runs to lead the team.
  • Muir has a team-leading 27 RBI, while Young is second with her 23 RBI.
  • Eden Muncy has tossed a team-high 53.0 innings in 15 appearances with a 2-9 record
  • Gabrielle Fowler is second on the pitching staff with 52.0 innings thrown in 20 appearances. She has a 2-6 record with three saves.
  • Marissa Barnes has tossed 49.1 innings and has a 3-6 record with three complete games.
