Softball Claims Wins Over Saint Francis & Merrimack
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team extended its win streak to five games with a 10-1 five-inning win over Saint Francis and then a 6-1 win over Merrimack on Friday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are now 6-2 this season. The Red Flash fell to 0-6 and the Warriors are 0-3 overall.
Game 1: UNCG 10 – Saint Francis 1 (5 innings)
- Three Spartans had multi-hit games, including Jessie Shipley (2-for-3), Rylie Williams (2-for-4) and Kaylyn Belfield (2-for-2).
- Shipley paced the game with three RBI, while Williams chipped in two.
- Samantha Beck went 1-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored.
- In the circle, Reese Byrd tossed 5.0 innings, giving up three hits and only one run with four strikeouts for her third win of the season.
- The Red Flash put the first run on the board in the top of the first with a bases-loaded walk giving them a 1-0 lead.
- The Spartans bounced back with one run on Shipley's RBI single up the middle to drive in Beck from second tying the game at 1-1.
- Byrd retired eight-straight batters from the second to the fifth inning.
- UNCG took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with Laney Deane's RBI single and then Shipley's two-run single.
- UNCG broke the game open with six runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the fifth. Williams' two-run double to left center capped UNCG's nine-run five-inning victory, 10-1.

Game 2: UNCG 6 – Merrimack 1
- Four Spartans went 2-for-3 at the plate, including Shipley, Grace Loftin, Beck and Belfield.
- Loftin paced the game with three RBI.
- Shipley, Loftin, Hadley Gardner and Beck each tallied a double in the game.
- UNCG scored five of its six runs between the first and second innings.
- Loftin kicked off the scoring for the Spartans with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first with one out for a 2-0 lead.
- Jorde Chartrand, in her first appearance in the circle, struck out three-straight batters in the top of the second.
- In the bottom of the second, the Blue & Gold scored three runs on four hits and three errors for a 5-0 advantage. After scoring on back-to-back errors, Shipley hit a RBI double to left center to score Belfield for the third run of the frame.
- Merrimack cut the deficit to four, 5-1, with McKayla Kortes' RBI single up the middle.
- The Spartans responded with their own run in the bottom of the sixth as Loftin connected for a RBI double, 6-1.
- After giving up a hit in the top of the seventh, Salem Ward struck out the final three batters to secure the 6-1 win and her third victory of the season in the circle.
