GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over the Pirates of Hampton on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

"We have been working toward this as it is one we had to have," said Head Coach Mat Iandolo. "We went out there and performed well against a solid squad that made us earn it."

The Spartans claimed the first doubles match of the day after a win by default due to Hampton not having a third doubles team. Olivia Gallagher and Alexandra Dodashev went on to defeat Serena Bryan and Diana Starodubtseva, 6-3, on court one. Masa Mitic and Meri Okuwaki defeated Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell, 6-3, on court two. However, UNCG went into singles play with a 1-0 advantage.

UNCG secured the first singles point of the day after Hampton did not have a sixth player for competition, giving the Spartans the 2-0 lead. Bly granted the Spartans a 3-0 advantage after taking down Mitic, 6-0, 6-1, on court four. Elisabeth Birkevold clinched the match for the Blue & Gold after defeating Melis Sakiroglu, 6-0, 6-2, on court five. Lauren Thomson secured the 5-0 lead for the Spartans in a 6-0, 3-6, 10-6 win over Bryan on court three. Starodubtseva gave the Pirates their only point of the day after securing a 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 win over Gallagher on court one, but UNCG would go on to claim the 6-1 victory.
