Women’s Tennis Falls to East Carolina
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team fell 7-0 in a non-conference matchup to the Pirates of East Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Alexandra Dodashev, Olivia Gallagher, Raegan Mitchell and Luna Urso were recognized in a special senior day ceremony on Saturday prior to the team's contest against the Pirates.
"We battled back nicely at the three and four positions and will grow from that," said Head Coach Mat Iandolo.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the match after securing the doubles point. Lilly Lancaster and Isabella Rivera Ortiz defeated Ella Olexa and Elisabeth Birkevold, 6-1, on court three. Ines Bachir and Xenia Jeromin made it 1-0 Pirates after taking a 6-2 contest from Gallagher and Dodashev on court two. Sydney Bly and Mitchell's matchup with Anne Lou Champion and Martina Muzzolon remained unfinished with Bly and Mitchell holding a 5-2 advantage on court two.
East Carolina continued its momentum into singles play by securing all six games for the 7-0 win. Martina Muzzulon put the Pirates up 2-0 after defeating Dodashev, 6-0, 6-1, on court two. Joan Madi then defeated Mitchell, 6-3, 6-2, on court five for a 3-0 lead. Champion clinched the match for East Carolina after defeating Urso, 6-4, 7-5, on court six. Bachir gave the Pirates a 5-0 advantage by claiming a 6-3, 6-2, win over Gallagher on court one. The final two matches were three-set battles that went back-and-forth. However, Jeromin was able to hold on for the 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 win over Bly on court three before Rivera defeated Birkevold, 7-6, 4-6, 10-7, on court four to grant the Pirates the 7-0 victory.
