Volleyball Returns Home to Host The Citadel & Mercer

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team returns to Greensboro this weekend to continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) campaign hosting The Citadel on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Mercer on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Fleming Gym.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG went 1-1 in its first SoCon road contests last week after securing a 3-1 win over Chattanooga on Friday, but falling at Western Carolina, 3-1.
  • The last time the Spartans defeated the Mocs was in the 2021 season as that squad claimed both regular season matches against Chattanooga that year.
  • Connore' Siler-Nixon was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Spartans offensively with 26 kills and earning a .447 hitting percentage.
  • Gabby Seeds was the leading setter for the Spartans last week with 88 assists, averaging 11.0 assists per set.
  • Chloe Nussbaum was the leading libero after notching 35 digs and averaging 4.38 digs per set.
     

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • The Spartans come into the weekend at 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon.
  • UNCG is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the SoCon standings with Chattanooga and Western Carolina.
  • UNCG stands out in top-50 nationally in three statistical categories: digs per set (20th/16.47), opponent hitting percentage (41st/.172) and digs (37th/972).
  • The squad is pacing the SoCon in assists per set (12.00), digs per set (16.47) and total digs (972).
  • Allie Sweet is currently ranked in the top-25 nationally among six statistical categories: attacks per set (3rd/12.66), total attacks (6th/747), total kills (17th/258), points (17th/292.5), points per set (22nd/4.96) and kills per set (27th/4.37).
  • Sweet is leading the SoCon in attacks per set (12.66), kills per set (4.37), points (292.5), points per set (4.96), total attacks (747) and total kills (258).
  • Nussbaum stands out nationally at 19th in total digs (287) and 20th in digs per set (4.86). She paces the league with her 287 total digs this season and is second with her 4.86 digs per set average.
  • Seeds is 39th in the country and second in the SoCon with a 9.83 assists per set average.
  • Seeds reached the 1,000-career assist milestone in the team's reverse sweep win over UNC Asheville on Sept. 20 in Greensboro.
  • Siler Nixon's SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Monday was the first of her career and fourth weekly nod for the Spartans this season.
  • Sweet has been named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week twice (Sept. 1 & Sept. 15) and Nussbaum earned SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 1.
  • The 2025 squad features 10 returners and six newcomers. Out of the six newcomers, four are transfer students and two are freshmen.
  • UNCG was picked to finish the SoCon regular season in a tie for fifth place with Chattanooga.
  • Sweet was selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Sweet's preseason nod comes after being named SoCon Freshman of the Year, while also being voted to the All-SoCon First Team and All-Freshman Team last season.

SCOUTING THE CITADEL

  • The Bulldogs are 0-14 overall and 0-4 in conference play, having fallen in both matches last week against Furman and Mercer.
  • The Citadel is tied with Samford for last place in the SoCon standings.
  • Rachel Reininger paces the team with 89 kills and 11 service aces.
  • Greta Pleuss is the leading setter with 286 assists.
  • Jess Martin and Luci Lippelgoos pace the team defensively with 99 digs and 43.0 total blocks.
  • The Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Bulldogs concluded the 2024 season 15-14 overall and 8-8 in conference. Their season was concluded with a 3-0 loss to Mercer in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament.
  • The Citadel will face ETSU on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Johnson City, Tennessee, before coming to Greensboro on Friday.

SERIES HISTORY VS THE CITADEL
UNCG leads the overall series against The Citadel at 34-13. The Citadel claimed both regular season matches against UNCG last season with a 1-3 win in Greensboro on Oct. 3, 2024 and a 3-0 win on Nov. 2, 2024, in Charleston.

SCOUTING MERCER

  • Mercer comes into the week at 5-12 overall and 1-3 in conference, sitting at seventh place in the SoCon standings.
  • The Bears most recently secured their first win in the SoCon with a 3-0 victory over the Citadel on Saturday in Macon, Georgia.
  • Sammi Bergjans is leading the league with a 0.44 aces per set average. She leads the Bears with 251 assists and 24 service aces this season.
  • Sophia Henry paces the team on the outside with 162 kills, while Joselynn Sanjurjo stands out at the net with 51.0 total blocks.
  • Aubri Martin is leading Mercer with 259 digs this season.
  • Henry was tabbed to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Mercer was picked to finish eighth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Bears wills face Wofford on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina, before coming to Greensboro on Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY VS MERCER
Mercer secured both regular season matches against UNCG last year with a 1-3 in Greensboro on Oct. 18, 2024 and a 3-0 win on Nov. 16, 2024, in Macon. In the two team's last meeting, the Bears defeated the Spartans 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 SoCon Tournament.
