Volleyball Posts Five-Set Triumph Over The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team claimed a five-set victory over The Citadel on Friday night (17-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10) in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play in Greensboro, North Carolina, at Fleming Gymnasium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team claimed a five-set victory over The Citadel on Friday night (17-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10) in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play in Greensboro, North Carolina, at Fleming Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Citadel posted the first couple points of the match to not allow UNCG to lead in the first game. Although the set tied on a couple occasions, the Bulldogs held the advantage throughout, securing the first frame, 25-17.

Set 2 – The Spartans turned the tide in the second set, getting out to a 5-1 run over the Bulldogs first thing. However, The Citadel bounced back with five-straight points for a 6-5 advantage. With the visiting team on top, 7-6, a kill from Connore' Siler-Nixon began a 7-1 Spartan run for a 10-7 lead. Although the game remained close, UNCG maintained the lead the rest of the way. Three-straight points that was concluded with a solo block from Allie Sweet granted UNCG set two, 25-17.  

Set 3 – The third set started off going back-and-forth. However, with UNCG leading 8-5, The Citadel strung together five consecutive points to take a 10-8 lead. The set tied several times throughout, but the Bulldogs were able to keep the Spartans from taking the lead again. With the set tied 22-22, the Bulldogs posted a 3-1 run to take the third game, 25-23.  

Set 4 – The fourth stanza was a point-for-point duel that saw seven ties in the early goings. However, with The Citadel holding a 7-6 lead, a 5-1 run from the Spartans gave the squad an 11-8 lead. UNCG never allowed The Citadel to take the advantage again the fourth set. A set-point kill from Sweet secured UNCG with the fourth set, 25-22.
 
Set 5 – The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the fifth frame for their final lead of the match. McKenna Timmerman launched a kill to begin a 4-0 run for a 5-2 lead giving the Spartans the advantage the rest of the way. A kill from Robin Rosser secured the final stanza for the Spartans, 15-10, for the 3-2 win.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

  • Timmerman registered her seventh career double-double and fourth of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs.
  • Gabby Seeds posted her third career double-double after notching a new career-best 60 assists and adding 10 digs.
  • Rosser earned a new career-best 20 kills.
  • Sweet led the Spartans with 25 kills and added nine digs.
  • Siler-Nixon paced the match with six total blocks.
  • Elenoa Sing and Kendall Lanclos led the match with three service aces apiece.
  • Chloe Nussbaum led the Spartans with 13 digs.

The Spartans will conclude the week by hosting Mercer on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Fleming Gym.
