The relative calmness of campus in the summer masks the hard work of faculty and staff grinding away at their areas of expertise. This summer, several Spartans contributed to works in the media, art, and sharing what makes them passionate about a particular topic.
We’re celebrating that work in this week’s Minerva Milestones. Here’s just some of the ways that faculty and staff’s talent comes alive:
Artistic Accolades
Walter Magazine featured the work of School of Art Director Barbara Campbell Thomas, M.F.A.
Hannah Grannemann, M.F.A, M.B.A., associate professor of arts administration, mentored the first cohort of the North Carolina Arts Council’s new professional development program ArtsCore.
University Communications’ Assistant Director of Creative Services Jaysen Buterin, M.A.‘s film “Kill Giggles” was released by Lionsgate and is available on popular streaming platforms, including Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
Associate Professor of Creative Writing Emilia Phillips, M.F.A., MLIS is a finalist for the 2025 Lammy Awards, which will be presented at a virtual ceremony on Oct. 4. “Nonbinary Bird of Paradise” was nominated for the LGBTQ+ poetry category.
In Recreation and Wellness, Assistant Director of Communications and Outreach Ashley Marshall was honored by the UCDA Design Awards. Marshall and Hannah Hind, a student graphic designer, won the Award of Excellence for Specialty Publication for creating the UNCG Student Wellness Guide and Activity Book.
Radiant Research
Thanks to a study led by Human Development and Family Studies Assistant Professor Kierra Sattler, Ph.D., we now have more data to understand the impact of foster care on children at younger ages.
Peace and Conflict Studies Associate Professor Ali Askerov, Ph.D. published a piece on power dynamics in the South Caucasus for E-International Relations.
University Libraries’ Business Librarian and Professor Steve Cramer, M.L.S. highlighted the work of nonprofit startups in the world of entrepreneurship.
Momentum in Media
Gerontology’s Elise Eifert, Ph.D. and Economics’ Jeff Sarbaum, Ph.D. promoted UNCG’s Emeritus Society on FOX8.
WXII 12 interviewed Bob Henson, Ph.D., associate dean of research, about what the chances of winning big when playing the lottery.
Principal Lecturer of Philosophy Wade Maki, M.A. spoke to The Assembly about how higher education might adapt to more artificial intelligence tools and generative AI.
Brian Clarey, media relations specialist of University Communications, took first place in the 2025 Association of Alternative Newsmedia Awards’ Feature Story, Shorter Form category for his work as a journalist for Triad City Beat.
Rebecca Adams, Ph.D., undergraduate gerontology program coordinator, delved into the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, drawing on years of study to reflect on aging among Deadhead fans.
