Faculty and staff play a big role in shaping the campus community — and New Student Transitions & First Year Experience asks for their help. Joining them as a Spartan SPEARS volunteer is a fun and rewarding way to connect with new students and help them start strong at the G.
Spartan SPEARS are volunteers stationed around campus to give directions, answer questions, and offer a friendly face during the first days of class. They help new students feel welcome and confident as they navigate campus.
There are two types of roles you can choose from:
- Backpack Zone: Wear a backpack with a YFY Spartan SPEARS flag and walk around a designated area, actively engaging with students.
- Station: Stay at a fixed location, marked with a feather flag, offering assistance as students pass by.
Volunteers can sign up for one or more one-hour shifts between 7:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20.
All Spartan SPEARS receive:
- Training on how to RAWK the role
- A lime green Spartan SPEARS t-shirt
- A nametag button
- A clipboard with a campus map and helpful information
Help welcome our newest Spartans and make their first days unforgettable. Questions can be emailed to yfy@uncg.edu.
