Women’s Soccer to Battle Coastal Carolina in Thursday Night Matchup

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team hits the road to face Coastal Carolina for a Thursday night match on Sept. 12 at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the fourth time that these two teams have faced off. UNCG has won all four meetings. The Spartans claimed last year's victory over the Chants with a score of 3-0 on Sept. 7 in Greensboro.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
Elon defeated UNCG, 2-1, on Sunday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Phoenix scored twice in the first half and the Spartans cut the deficit to one in the second half with a penalty goal from Morgan Brubaker. Goalkeeper Emma Malone made four saves in the game.
 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • Head Coach Stefani Workman is in her first year at the helm of the Spartans and eighth year overall with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Spartans added six freshmen and one graduate transfer to the 2024 roster.
  • Malone was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3. This was her first career weekly award.
  • This was the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 28, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.
  • Taylor Mentzer currently leads the Spartans with two goals scored this season.
  • Kiss is second on the team with three points (1 G, 1 A) and Brubaker is third on the team with one goal.
  • Ryen Ortiz has chipped in an assist this season.

SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA

  • Coastal Carolina concluded the 2023 season 3-12-2 overall and 0-8-2 in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC).
  • The Chanticleers were voted to finish 12th in the 2024 SBC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Chants most recently fell 3-0 to Lipscomb on Sunday.
  • Prior to that loss, they were on a three-game unbeaten streak with a 0-0 draw to East Carolina and 1-0 victories over UAB and Belmont.
  • Tamlyn Parkes is 2-for-3 in penalty kicks and is leading the team with two goals.
  • Olivia Goretski has tallied one goal.
  • Stella Lawson has recorded the Chants' only assist this season.
  • Vivienne Carr and Aris Lamanna have both appeared in net for the Chants, as Carr has played in seven games with a 1.33 goals against average and Lamanna has appeared in two games with a 1.00 goals against average.
