Join us on this exciting trip biking and hiking in the Virginia mountains. The first half of the trip we will spend biking 25+ miles along the Virginia Creeper Trail, an old railroad bed converted to a scenic bike path (bike rental included). Don’t let the mileage intimidate you — the majority of the biking is downhill! The bike trail is smooth and crosses through some of Southern Virginia’s most beautiful country landscapes. We will spend the second half of the trip hiking and exploring Grayson Highlands State Park. We will also make sure to have enough downtime at our campsite to rest and connect with your new friends! Catalyst is a program where participants engage in meaningful service and be a spark for change! You and your fellow students will have the opportunity to learn about the social and environmental issues that have an impact on our community, serve alongside community partners in the triad, and reflect on your experiences as a group. Catalyst Days are open to all UNCG students. We have space for 13 participants, and registration is open until spots are filled. Come with us to one of North Carolina’s most popular bouldering sites! While many outdoor enthusiasts love top rope and sport climbing, bouldering is the most simple and free form of climbing. All you need are shoes and some good friends to support you. We’ll bring the crash pads, and lunch, you bring the energy and we’re sure to have a perfect Sunday at the crag. (Please note the Foust Building does not have an elevator.) If attending virtually, please register and the session link will be emailed to you soon.  This week’s topic:     Analysis of Deaf Students’ Experiences in Sign Language Interpreter-mediated Classroom in Public                                    Universities in Ghana. Presenter:                  Dr. Felix Kwame Kumedzro, Principal, Akatsi College of Education, Ghana Target Audience:      Campus-wide Bring your lunch and join us in-person or virtually! This qualitative study, guided by three research questions, explored the experiences of Deaf students in sign language interpreter-mediated classrooms at three Ghanaian public universities. Using an interpretative phenomenological design, the study employed a two-stage sampling approach, combining purposive and convenience sampling to recruit participants. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, and results were presented based on experiential themes that emerged from the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Findings revealed that Deaf students faced significant challenges such as inconsistent interpreter availability, lecturers’ polarised teaching methods, and occasional mockery. Positive experiences were reported when lecturers employed inclusive strategies and interpreters attended lectures regularly. Furthermore, hearing students provided peer support through sign language interpreting assistance and assignment reviews, motivated by mutual benefits that reflect the Ubuntu ethos of collective humanity. It is therefore recommended that lecturers continually and intentionally adopt Deaf-friendly teaching strategies to ensure Deaf students are not marginalized in the classroom, and universities should employ more sign language interpreters.

An Outdoor Adventures classic, this trip takes you on one of the most premier whitewater destinations in Western North Carolina and serves as an introduction to the sport of whitewater kayaking! We begin our trip on Friday afternoon, learning the basics of kayaking in moving water to get you comfortable. On Saturday morning, we will depart for the Tuckasegee, a fun river that runs regularly and is an excellent place to learn to paddle or work on skills. After we finish paddling, we will head back to our campsite for a delicious dinner and some downtime. Sunday morning brings us back to the river where we’ll paddle again before heading back to campus.

This Outdoor Adventures' classic brings us to Pilot Mountain for a day of rock climbing and testing our limits. We will climb a few different routes, moving around the climbing area throughout the day, with a break for lunch alongside the face of the mountain. No outdoor climbing experience is necessary, we will teach you all that you need to know!

Resilience  Learn how to stay grounded, confident, and adaptable in the face of stress, change, and uncertainty.  College life is full of challenges: busy schedules, shifting priorities, group projects, leadership responsibilities, and moments when life feels overwhelming. Resilience is a two-hour, in-person workshop designed to help UNCG students build the mindset and practices needed to navigate it all with confidence and clarity.
