Men’s Soccer Scores Twice in Second Half to Draw with Davidson
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to tie the Davidson Wildcats, 2-2, in non-conference action on Friday night at Alumni Soccer Stadium.
Freshman midfielder Issah Haruna scored his first collegiate goal in the 65th minute off a pass from senior midfielder Yoshiya Okawa, who tied it five minutes later in the 70th minute when he forced a turnover and simultaneously scored to tie it.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats struck first in the 12th minute when Denis Krioutchenkov beat UNCG's Seth Wilson on a penalty kick to make it 1-0. Then in the 38th minute, Davidson's Blake Peterson finished with a header following a pass from Baylen Young. The Wildcats carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting the Spartans, 7-4, and each side had a corner kick in the first 45 minutes.
The Spartans surged on offense in the second half, scoring a pair of goals in the 65th and 70th minutes to force the draw with Davidson. Haruna got UNCG on the board first when he fired a shot past Davidson's Lucas Beltran after receiving a touch from Okawa inside the 18-yard box. Okawa then tied it five minutes later by pressing the Wildcats' defenders, stealing the ball and firing it into the back of the net from the top of the box. The Spartans outshot the Wildcats 9-6 in the second half to ultimately even it up at 13 shots a piece. UNCG dominated the second half, earning three corner kicks while holding Davidson to none for a 4-1 advantage in the match.
