UNCG Announces Contract Extension for Director of Athletics, Brian Mackin

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Director of Athletics Brian Mackin has signed a contract extension that will keep him leading the Spartans through June 2029.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Director of Athletics Brian Mackin has signed a contract extension that will keep him leading the Spartans through June 2029.
 
"Over the past three years, Brian Mackin has transformed the culture of UNCG Athletics," said Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. "Student-athletes are performing on and off the field, coaches and staff are thriving and he has been a successful fundraiser and vital member of the greater Greensboro community. This extension is a vote of confidence by me and our Board of Trustees."
 
Mackin has guided the Blue & Gold since beginning his tenure on January 4, 2022. Now, in the midst of his third year with the Spartans, Mackin has advanced fundraising, maintained a championship mentality and continued to strive for academic excellence and student-athlete well-being.

and UNCG alumni have been very supportive in our fundraising initiatives as we continue to raise money to enhance the student-athlete experience. I consider myself blessed to come to work every day with our elite coaches and dedicated support staff that work tirelessly day in and out."
 
During Mackin's first full year, he helped the Spartans raise more than $5.5 million, the most in program history, including the largest gift of $3.8 million from the late James Dutton. UNCG Athletics totaled 1,775 donors last year, the most donors in program history. Also, Mackin aided in bringing in the third- most dollars ever with $1,845,607. UNCG is in the midst of a historic fundraising campaign and Athletics has already surpassed its campaign goal of $17 million, with over $20 million raised and counting.
 
In competition, Spartan student-athletes have produced memorable moments under Mackin's leadership, including five SoCon Regular Season Championships, five SoCon Tournament Championships, one WNIT bid, and 11 appearances in NCAA Championships.
 
Additional athletic highlights include the 2022 UNCG men's soccer's historic run, reaching the NCAA Quarterfinal round for the first time. Softball earned its seventh NCAA Tournament bid after winning the 2023 SoCon Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Men's golf received its fifth team bid in Division I history to the NCAA Regionals in 2024 and Kelvin Hernandez is the first Spartan in Division I history to move on to the NCAA Championship round.
 
Mackin's tenure has also included academic achievements such as the most recent NCAA graduation success rate (GSR) of 95%, which is the highest for UNCG since the GSR was created in 2002. Also, in 2023-24, Spartan student- athletes boasted a 3.41 grade-point average, and 85% of the department had a 3.0 GPA or higher.
 
On a national level, Mackin is currently serving on the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee assisting in the selections of the NCAA Tournament brackets.
 
Mackin's career path began with high-level corporate and private sector experience with Vulcan Materials Company, Dunn Construction and PNC

Bank. Prior to UNCG, Mackin was the director of athletics at UAB and deputy commissioner at Conference USA.
 
Mackin graduated from UAB in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance. While at UAB, Mackin was a four-year letterman in baseball for the Blazers and played in the Houston Astros minor league system. Most importantly, Mackin is the proud father of Ragland, Brian Jr., and Mary Aileen.
