Volleyball Set for Two SoCon Road Matches

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball will hit the road this week to face Wofford on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina and then The Citadel on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Charleston, South Carolina.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG dropped both its matches last week after falling at Furman, 3-0, and against ETSU, 3-0, in Greensboro.
  • Chloe Nussbaum led the Spartans as the libero last week by recording 28 total digs for a 4.67 digs per set average.
  • Allie Sweet paced the Spartans with 17 kills, while adding 3.0 total blocks and 13 digs.
  • Izora Gragg led the squad as the setter with 34 total assists, averaging 5.67 assists per set. The sophomore added four service aces, nine digs and one block on the week.

 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG heads into the week with a 7-15 overall record and a 2-8 mark in SoCon play.
  • The Spartans currently sit at eighth place in the SoCon standings.
  • As a team, UNCG is in the top five in the conference among six statistical categories: aces per set (5th/1.51), blocks per set (4th/1.99), hitting percentage (5th/.209), digs (5th/1,210), kills (5th/1,013), service aces (5th/125), total attacks (4th/2,941) and total blocks (3rd/165.0).
  • Sweet is pacing the conference in six categories and stands out nationally: attacks per set (2nd/13.25), kills per set (32nd/4.25), points (18th/399.0), points per set (36th/4.81), total attacks (2nd/1,100) and total kills (18th/353).  
  • Gragg is third in the conference with 800 assists and a 9.64 assists per set average.
  • Nussbaum is the best passer on the team with 325 digs on the season.
  • Sweet was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2 in the first round of weekly awards for the 2024 season.
  • Head Coach Felicia Turner is in her second season at the helm of the UNCG volleyball team in 2024. 
  • Assistant Coach Trent Dunahoo is in his second season with the Spartans, while Assistant Coach Justin Paggao was added to the coaching staff in the summer of 2024.
  • UNCG was picked to finish ninth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The 2024 squad features seven returners and 10 newcomers (five freshmen and five transfers).

 
SCOUTING WOFFORD

  • The Terriers sit at second place in the conference standings with a 16-6 overall record and are 8-2 in the SoCon.
  • Wofford went 2-0 on the road last week after defeating Chattanooga in straight sets and claiming a 3-1 win over Samford.
  • The Terriers are ranked in the top 10 nationally in three categories: digs per set (2nd/18.64), attacks per set (8th/38.41) and digs (9th/1,547).
  • Laney Klika is leading the SoCon and is ranked ninth nationally with a 5.24 digs per set average.
  • Bradley Brown is pacing the conference with a .358 hitting percentage.
  • Sarah MacLean is leading the team on the outside with 238 kills.
  • Taylor Pecht and Maddy Frazier stand out as the setting duo with 459 and 415 assists, respectively.
  • Klika and Annemarie Rakoski are pacing the team defensively with 413 digs and 77.0 total blocks, respectively.
  • The Terriers were picked to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with one first-place vote.
  • Wofford will host The Citadel on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg before welcoming UNCG on Friday.

SERIES HISTORY VS WOFFORD
The Spartans lead in the overall series against the Terriers at 33-20. Wofford claimed both matches against UNCG last season. The most recent matchup against the two teams came in Greensboro earlier this season with the Terriers taking the 3-0 win over the Spartans.

SCOUTING THE CITADEL

  • The Citadel currently stands in fifth place in the SoCon with an 11-10 overall record and is 5-5 in the league.
  • The Bulldogs went 1-1 on the road last week after defeating Western Carolina, 3-1, and dropping one at Mercer, 3-0.
  • As a team, The Citadel is ranked third nationally with an 18.43 digs per set average and is sixth with a 39.00 attacks per set average.
  • Ali Ruffin is leading the Bulldogs on the outside with 242 kills.
  • Belle Hogan stands out on the team as the setter with 614 assists.
  • Jaelynn Elgert and Peri Hoshock are pacing the team defensively with 372 digs and 61.0 total blocks, respectively.
  • The Bulldogs were picked to finish first in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with four first-place votes.
  • Hogan and Ruffin were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • The Citadel will take on Wofford Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg before hosting UNCG on Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY VS THE CITADEL
UNCG leads the overall series against The Citadel at 34-12. The Citadel claimed this season's earlier match over UNCG, 3-1 in Greensboro. The Bulldogs took both matches from the Spartans last season.

UP NEXT
The Spartans return home for the final time this season to host Chattanooga on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6:00 p.m. and Western Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5:00 p.m. in Fleming Gym.
 
For Friday's match the first 50 fans will receive free pizza. Saturday's match will feature a pregame senior day ceremony. In addition, the first 60 fans will receive free Krispy Kreme and there will be postgame autographs following the match.
