Track Set for SoCon Outdoor Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's and women's track teams begin their postseason schedule as they compete in the 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Outdoor Track & Field Championships from Monday, May 6 to Tuesday, May 7.
The championships will be held at the Shauna Yelton Field at the Samford Track & Soccer Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, hosted by Samford University. Day two of the championships will be streamed on ESPN+.
Meet/Facility History
- Last year, the championships were contested at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina, hosted by Western Carolina.
- This year marks the 99th championship for the men and the 37th for the women.
- Record Book
- Monday's schedule gets under way with the start of the decathlon at 11 a.m., followed by the start of the heptathlon at 11:15. The Men's hammer throw final gets the field events started at 12:30 p.m., with the first track event, the preliminaries of the men's 1,500-meter run, slated to begin at 4 p.m. In all, 12 champions will be crowned on the first day of competition – four on the track and eight in field events.
- Tuesday's schedule opens with resumption of the decathlon at 11 a.m., with the heptathlon resuming at 11:15. Field events begin with the men's shot put and women's discus finals at 1:15 p.m. and the men's 4x100-meter relay gets the track events started at 3 p.m. The day concludes with the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays at 6:25 and 6:35, respectively, followed by the awards ceremony. Thirty events will crown champions on the final day of the meet.

LAST TIME OUT
- UNCG sent two individuals to The Hill City Twilight on Friday.
- Prior to that meet, the Spartans sent seven from the men's team to the Charlotte Invitational.
- Four of the seven posted personal best times at the invitational.
- Samuel Barnard posted a personal best time of 1:51.93 in the 800-meter run.
- Khalid Abdullahi, Lane Prochaska, and Colin Keck each ran personal best times in the 1500-meter run.
How the women line up at the Championships
- Vicky Sosa is set to run the 10,000-meter run for the first time in her collegiate career.
- This year she has run personal best times of 4:42.60 in the 1500-meter run and 17:21.45 in the 5000-meter run. Her 1500-meter time is 18th on the SoCon performance list, while her 5000-meter time is 14th overall.
- Shay Soukup will be competing in the 800-meter run, where she ran a season-best time of 2:20.76 at the 2024 Aggie Classic in mid-April. Her time is 21st overall on the SoCon performance list.
- Tenley Douglass, in her first SoCon Outdoor Championship, will be competing in the 1500-meter run. In her two attempts this season, she ran a personal best time of 4:51.74 at the Aggie Classic.
How the men line up at the Championships
- Prochaska's 1500-meter personal best time of 3:57.33 from this season's Charlotte Invitational is 18th on the SoCon performance list.
- Keck's personal best time of 3:58.62 in the 1500-meter run from the Charlotte Invitational is 22nd on the performance list.
- Barnard and Andrew Hamilton's times from this season in the 800-meter run are currently in the top-10 of the SoCon performance lists, sitting sixth and eighth, respectively.
- Both Ethan Long and Luke Ward will be running the 10,000-meter run for the first time this season.
- Long's personal best time of 14:41.78 in the 5000-meter run at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic is 11th on the SoCon performance list.
- Ward also had a personal best time of 15:12.03 in the 5000-meter run this season at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic, where the time is 19th overall.
- Khalid Abdullahi, in his first attempt at a 5000-meter run in his collegiate career, ran a time of 14:44.49 at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic. His time is 12th on the SoCon performance list.
