Sweet Named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman outside hitter Allie Sweet of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
In her collegiate debut, Sweet led the Spartans with 61 kills for a 4.69 kills per set average on the week, allowing the squad to start the 2024 season 2-1 overall. She registered a total of 27 kills in her first collegiate match against Robert Morris on Friday, leading the team to a 3-1 win over the Colonials. The last time someone had 27 kills was when Aylin Baran earned the feat against UNC Asheville on Sept. 26, 2023.
In addition, the Woodstock, Georgia native, recorded her first double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs in the team's 3-1 win over USC Upstate on Saturday. Sweet also notched 18 kills in the team's competitive five-set battle with Missouri State Friday night.
"I am so honored and proud to receive my first collegiate award," said Sweet. "It feels so surreal and I am so grateful to be on this team with my teammates along with my coaches. I am so proud of how we played this weekend and I cannot wait to see what else we have in store!"
Monday's recognition marks the first time a Spartan has earned a SoCon weekly award under Head Coach Felicia Turner. The last time a Spartan earned a weekly award was on August 29, 2022, when Gabriela McHugh was named SoCon Setter of the Week, while the last time the team saw a SoCon Offensive Player of the Week recognition was on Nov. 15, 2021 when Kayla White earned the mention.
