$92 million, 200,000 square foot fitness and wellness center for students, staff, and faculty.
This is the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness. It's the student recreation center here at UNCG, so every student gets a membership included in their tuition. The Kaplan Center offers so much more than recreation. Its focus is on complete mental and physical wellness.

More Info

The Kaplan Center, a 216,000 square foot facility, was a $93 million construction project that opened its doors in 2016.

The center features free weights, strength training equipment, and cardio equipment. Along with five basketball courts; spaces to play volleyball, badminton, and indoor soccer; racquetball courts; two swimming pools; studios for our group fitness classes, and a 54-foot indoor rock climbing wall.

Surrounding the climbing wall is the Outdoor Adventures Department which serves the UNCG community with its three divisions: Adventure Trips, Rental & Trip Center (outdoor equipment rental) and the indoor climbing wall. Outdoor Adventures strives to blend recreation and education to offer a quality outdoor experience for every participant whether its a multi-day backpacking trip or single day outing to hike and enjoy nature.

The aquatics portion features a full natatorium with an Olympic size lap pool and a smaller activity pool. Regular events are hosted such as "dive in movies" where students get an inner tube and sit in the pool to watch a water related movie together. The Kaplan Center also features non-athletic amenities such as napping pods and hydromassage chairs as its focus is on complete Wellness.

The creation of the Kaplan Wellness Center

The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness at UNCG opened in the Fall of 2016. An enhanced “student recreation center,” at over 216,000 sq. ft., it is more than double the size of the previously existing student recreation center.  It includes several multi-purpose gyms, a 23,000 sq. ft. weight/cardio space, group fitness studios, a 54 ft. climbing wall, racquetball courts, two running tracks, lap and leisure pool, numerous meeting rooms, as well as many other amenities and services.  The Kaplan Center is named in honor of the businessman and philanthropist Leonard J. Kaplan, and was made possible by a gift from his widow, Tobee Kaplan.
